Extractions: Natalya Nechayeva / For MT Last weekend, soprano Olga Matveyeva recreated the ambience of old Ostankino by adopting the persona of the legendary serf singer Praskovya Kovalyova. The summer months inevitably see Muscovites descend on the city's historic estates, where they soak up sun and stroll across the neatly kept grounds. But in a parallel tradition that dates back to the estates' noble past, summer also brings the alluring attraction of concerts. With most orchestras and opera companies taking a break until the fall, Moscow music lovers can satisfy their craving for the classics by attending performances at Ostankino, Tsaritsyno and Kuskovo. Indeed, few venues in Moscow are more suited to hosting summer concerts than these palaces, where attending a performance transports you to an imperial past to the time when high society would converge on these very same mansions for musical soirees. Ostankino: The centerpiece of this elegant estate is a splendid 18th-century concert hall. One of the few theaters of the period that is still intact and frequently used today, it is renowned for its diligently preserved wooden interior, decorated with classical motifs on stucco and embellished with chandeliers and peacock blue curtains.

This is an excellent, concise article about this famous lady and she forms the inspiration for this month's Editorial Musings. Nigel Nettheim has expanded his offerings about Maryla Jonas into an index listing several rare articles about her life. This past month two readers (see Letters to the Editor ) introduced me to two great pianists from the past who have been neglected: Etelka Freund (b. Hungary, 1879; d. Zurich, May 27, 1977) and Lubka Kolessa (b. Lvov, Ukraine, May 19,1904; d. Toronto, Canada, 1997).

Extractions: From the San Antonio Express-News Music review: Composers' works lively, exciting By Diane Windeler Special to the Express-News November 6, 2003 Sunday's ear-opening concert by the Composers Alliance of San Antonio was further proof that we need not look outside for exciting new music; a good deal of it is being created here. Eight members of the alliance were represented at the Unitarian Universalist Church, mostly showcasing works written within the last two years. From Michael Twomey of Our Lady of the Lake University came "Exegesis," a 2001 score for viola and computerized accompaniment, performed by the composer. This airy, lyrical work is anchored by a five-note phrase that is framed with echoes, wing-like fluttering, gentle clatters and other intriguing effects moving between two speakers. Ken Metz of the University of the Incarnate Word set "Songs from Mother Goose," six of the scarier nursery rhymes, for voice and piano. Confidently performed by baritone Bill Higgins and Irina Khovanskaya, the melodic style is rather like Lee Hoiby in a funk, the harmonies employing chromatics and suspensions to reflect the darker sides of those familiar texts. The oldest score came from Trinity University's Justin Merritt, the multi-textured, complex but appealing "5 Preludes for Piano" (1999). Its flavors vary from ethereal
