Well known as both soloists and chamber musicians, the piano faculty includes prize winners in the Van Cliburn, Tchaikovsky, Budapest, Vianna da Motta and Montreal International Competitions. Training involves all aspects of a professional career, and focuses on the solo repertoire. It also includes chamber music, large ensembles, and two pianos-four hands literature. Pedagogical preparation of tomorrow's piano teachers is also a concern of the program. Public recitals are required of undergraduate Performance students from the second term onwards and from the first term at the graduate level. Competitions at the national and international levels are also strongly encouraged. Finally, a unique piano seminar is offered to graduate and third-year undergraduate students, where many specific topics that are usually not discussed in a formal lesson's context can be debated in group classes.

Extractions: RCA Red Seal 68442 (9 CDs) (M) TT: 10 hours + This is a release of enormous interest: "The William Kapell Edition," a 9-CD set of most available recordings by the remarkable American pianist who died so young more than four decades ago. William Kapell, born in New York September 20, 1922, studied with Olga Samaroff, won the 1940 Philadelphia Orchestra Youth Contest while still at Juilliard, and the following year won both the Naumburg and Town Hall Endowment Awards. More honors followed, and in 1942 he played the Khachaturian Concerto with Efrem Kurtz and the New York Philharmonic. This music became identified with him and in 1946 he recorded it with Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony, a best-selling classical 78rpm album, one of his first under an exclusive contract with RCA. This was an enormous loss to the musical world, but at least we can remember him through his recordings. Some were issued years ago on CD, but now we have all of his RCA recordings as well as some from other sources, collected in one set; most have been unavailable for decades, and many are issued for the first time in any format. The set includes the three concertos he recorded for RCA (Beethoven Second, Khachaturian, Rachmaninoff Second), and the same composer's
William Wolfram william Wolfram. pianist A former Silver Medallist at both the william Kapelland Naumburg competitions. as well as Bronze Medallist at the Tchaikovsky http://www.concordiaplayers.org/wolfram.htm
Extractions: William Wolfram Pianist American pianist William Wolfram has gained recognition as an artist who combines powerful Romantic instincts with a truly formidable command of the keyboard. A former Silver Medallist at both the William Kapell and Naumburg competitions. as well as Bronze Medallist at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Mr. Wolfram has drawn plaudits from critics both here and abroad for his musical integrity and compelling pianism. In the words of The New York Times, Wolframs technique is flabbergasting; fiendishly difficult octave passages were as childs play, and his strength is tempered by an easy poetry. In November 1999, Mr. Wolfram was lauded by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel for his performance of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra: Wolfram navigated the concerto with the tremendous technical agility required by Liszt's piano music. But his technical facility paled in comparison to the gripping interpretation he gave the piece. The quick, almost schizophrenic shifts of mood and texture of this single-movement piece are a tough feat to pull off. Wolfram caught the attention and imagination of his audience in the piece's first bars, and kept them to the end with a commanding performance. Moving between the contrasting sections of the piece, Wolfram did not just change dynamics, articulations and tone color, he changed character. It was that sense of drama, conveyed musically that made his performance thoroughly fascinating to hear.

Piano Man and william kapell, the stunningly brilliant wunderkind who died in an airplane It had to be william Bolcolm. He was a student of Darius Milhaud, http://citypaper.net/articles/101598/music.pianoman.shtml
Extractions: By Peter Burwasser Gary Graffman, the director of one of the most revered music schools in the world, the Curtis Institute of Music, didn't even teach regularly prior to 1979. It wasn't in his plans. His performing career was in full swing, and his thrilling virtuosity and insightful interpretations were in demand in musical capitals around the world. When muscular problems in his right hand effectively ended his career as a concert pianist, he began teaching at his alma mater, joining the Curtis faculty in 1980, and by 1986 he was named artistic director. As he prepares to celebrate his 70th birthday, the distinguished artist looks back at his life with a mix of wistfulness and wonderment. "In spite of what happened to my hand, I feel blessed to be involved with these kids." Although Graffman did not teach during the heyday of his concertizing, this was strictly a personal decision. The old dictum that those who cannot do, teach, does not apply to piano pedagogy. The mighty Liszt himself was one of the great teachers, as was Artur Schnabel (the teacher of Leon Fleisher) in this century. In fact, one of Gary Graffman's teachers, after his years at Curtis under the tutelage of the legendary Isabelle Vengerova, was the most famous performer of them all, Vladimir Horowitz. Horowitz taught infrequently, and the eccentric genius had a reputation for ruining his students. But Graffman had a positive experience.
