Extractions: Gala Concert William Kapell Foundation Gala Concert Celebrating its 25th Anniversary and William Kapell on the 50th Anniversary of his death by M'Lou Dietzer The memory of pianist William Kapell was graciously honored on Sunday afternoon, November 2, 2003 in the wonderfully resonant Zipper Concert Hall of the Colburn School of the Performing Arts when six excellent pianists performed original compositions plus work by Franz Liszt, Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. From the program's biography"Kapell had a strong interest in the music of his own time and was particularly devoted to Aaron Copland's piano works." Kapell was returning from a concert tour of Australia on October 29, 1953 when his plan crashed upon landing in San Francisco; he was only 31 years old. The concert was sponsored by The William Kapell Piano Foundation for Contemporary Music and Musicians, which was founded in 1978 by pianist Michael Sellers. The purpose of this Foundation is to enlarge the body of significant works for piano solo, to revive neglected but worthy piano works written after 1900 and to encourage the performance of neglected works by Franz Liszt which show his influence on 20th century music. In a recent note from Kapell's widow to Sellers, she wrote

A top prize-winner in the 1988 William Kapell International Piano Competition and the 1986 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, he has performed to high critical acclaim at prestigious venues, including Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Beethovenhalle, Hall of the Americas and the Marlboro Music Festival. Born in Falmouth, near Montego Bay, Jamaica, Mr. Shaw's interest in music began with a toy piano his mother purchased at Woolworth's to teach him everything she had memorized from observing her guardian, a Kingston piano teacher, in secret. By age eight he was sight-reading hymns for church services, and at sixteen he won the Howard Cooke Award for Excellence in Music, Jamaica's highest classical music award in the annual Festival of Arts competition. Subsequent advanced studies, courtesy of the Jamaican Government, French Government, and William Petschek, Maro Ajemian and Isabel Mason Scholarships, led to a ten-year affiliation with noted American pianist William Masselos and three degrees - Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts - from New York's famed Juilliard School.
