An excerpt taken from http://www.allclassical.com/ "Biography: Byron Janis (b. 1928) was one of the most brilliant of his generation of American pianists before his career was cut short by illness. At the age of seven he was taken to New York, becoming a pupil of Adele Marcus, then with Joseph and Rosina Lhévinne. In 1943 he made his professional debut playing Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 with the NBC Symphony Orchestra in New York, with Frank Black conducting. In 1944 he repeated the same concerto in Pittsburgh with thirteen- year-old Lorin Maazel conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Vladimir Horowitz was in the audience, and subsequently invited Janis to study with him. Then Janis embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist, including a 1948 tour to South America, and a 1952 tour of Europe. In 1960 Janis was chosen as the first American artist to be sent to the Soviet Union, opening a newly formed Cultural Exchange between the USSR and the United States. The result was a brilliant Mercury Living Presence LP that is an all-time classic, pairing the Rachmaninov First and Prokofiev Third Concertos. Aided by exemplary sound recording, the Prokofiev in particular is still regarded by many connoisseurs as the work's finest recorded interpretation. In 1995 the CD version won the Cannes Award for Best Reissue. He interrupted his career in the late 1960s at the onset of an illness, and temporarily resumed it in 1972. Soon however, his concert appearances became more rare....."

With God's grace, the help of others and your own courage, you can handle life's hurts-the wounds you suffer, those you inflict, and the terrible events beyond human control. Pianist Byron Janis, 70, can again delight in playing music after an ordeal of physical and mental anguish. As a young man, Janis had been an international musical sensation. Even after a 1973 diagnosis of arthritis in both hands, he kept playing despite pain. By 1990, the pianist needed relief and agreed to surgery. This hurt his ability to play, sending him into a serious depression. "Music had been my whole life and I couldn't see any alternative." In time, Janis realized he could write songs and teach. He even became a spokesman for the Arthritis Foundation. Thanks to new treatment, he is performing again "with the same fire." Janis adds, "I have had an extraordinary life. I have suffered a lot and have also had marvelous joy."

Extractions: The Rach 3 recordings page THE LATEST ADDITIONS: Orlovetsky/Titov, Ashkenazy/Haitink, Hough/Litton, and Kocsis/de Waart I got my first recording of Rachmaninoff's 3rd concerto on November 17, 1990, by Horowitz/Reiner on RCA. At that time, I didn't like the piece at all. However, many of my friends loved the concerto, so I wanted to give it a few more tries, by buying the two other commercial recordings Horowitz made, the Ashkenazy/Previn, and Argerich/Chailly's version, which was touted as "The Ultimate Rach 3!" by Philips. Still, none of them worked for me. I didn't like this concerto very much, until I decided to try to play it myself. Through learning the piece, I became familiar with it, and it was in December 1996 that I decided to collect recordings of this magnificient work. At first, I didn't want to get all versions, and thought about 20 would be enough. Then, in 1999, a pen pal told me about this guy named Scott Colebank who owned nearly all Rach 3's ever released. So, I thought I should aim higher and decided to buy all versions I could find. Since then, the pursuit of Rach 3's has brought me much joy and excitement. About 170 versions of this work have been issued commercially, and it is my goal to collect all of them. It certainly is a costly project, but that isn't where the biggest difficulty is. The hardest thing is finding these recordings. Of these well over 100 versions, only about 60 are in print and can be obtained in where I live, i.e. the U.S. An additional 15 or so (a very rough estimate) are in print but are not available in the States, but can still be purchased through the internet. Most of the remaining ones are extremely hard to find, and can be found only through hard work, help from an international network of collectors, lots of luck, and perseverance. My collection of Rach 3's has CDs/LPs/DVDs acquired from Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Monaco, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, and of course the United States.
