Extractions: "Spring," the Second Vancouver International New Music Festival (29 May-6 June 1998), featured a plethora of new music by Canadian, U.S., and European composers, including nineteen premiers of Canadian works. Ten concerts and five symposia at which composers, conductors, and performers discussed issues related to contemporary music constituted the event. The festival's international guest was James MacMillan from Scotland, whose music was highlighed during the week. The opening concert on 29 May by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Owen Underhill and Sergiu Comissiona featured the music of four Canadian composers. The concert began with Orchestral Tuning Arrangment (1994) by Linda Catlin Smith and John Oswald, a work which includes choreographed movements by orchestra members as the tuning process takes place. Keith Hamel's energetic and motoristic Overdrive (1998) was followed by Rodney Sharman's transcendent and serene scherzo Archaic Smile (1997). Also on the program were works by MacMillan and Sofia Gubaildulina.

This is probably the most spectacular digital recording we've ever heard, both for imaging, clarity and dynamic range. It's astonishing that it was made in 1978, using the "Soundstream" system which lost out to other, large-corporately-financed systems. The repertoire is (strangely) still under-represented in the catalogue but, in recordings like these, it wouldn't matter if there were dozens of versions available! London Symphony Orchestra; Morton Gould. Citadel CTD 88130 (U.S.A.) GORDON JACOB (1895-1984): Mini Concerto for Clarinet and Strings, Concertino for Clarinet and Strings (after Tartini), Clarinet Quintet, Clarinet Trio. Resolutely tonal and Romantic in style, these pieces, even the apparently ludicrously brief Mini Concerto, display a depth of feeling that is all too often lacking in 20th-century music. There is more than a hint of English pastoral throughout, but the music never sounds like the more familiar composers associated with that phrase, except fleetingly and superficially, and there is much beauty to savor here. Warmly recommended. Charles Russo (clarinet), Premier Chamber Orchestra; David Gilbert. Premier PRCD 1052 (U.S.A.)

Extractions: At long last the "full Monty" will be in print later this year. A first full length biography of the man and his music will be published by Melrose Books in England, hopefully to coincide with the Centenary of Mantovani's birth on 15 November. Even with the many releases this year of Genuine Mantovani And His Orchestra music, this is the most exciting release for Mantovani fans. The 24 chapter, 300 page hardback book, "Mantovani - A Lifetime In Music" tells the story of Mantovani's quest for musical perfection and how he eventually achieved it. Written with the co-operation of his family, his record producer, several former musicians, Decca luminaries and Mantovani fans, this is the "real deal", a book that no Mantovani fan or anyone interested in light orchestral music can afford to be without. The work outlines the Mantovani story as it has never been told before: his childhood
