Extractions: On the particular piece 'Improvisations on la Folia' is said at the same page: We have no surviving 16th-century choreography for the Folia melody, which was widely known and popular for almost three centuries. Dancers may improvise, as musicians love to do, to the haunting little strain or simply to its bass. You do not have to be a musicologist or a great analyser of 16th Century dances to recognize instantly in 'improvisations on la Folia' the later Folia-theme which was introduced (ok, i make an exception for Falconieri ) by Lully in 1672. The subtitle 'flowers of the 16th Century Italian Dance Music' is absolutely incorrect. I wonder what kind of dance is picked for this Baroque music pur sang and clearly intended for a listening audience the delicate way it is played. However the Folia theme (a nice blending of the Gallot and Ruiz de Ribayaz ) sounds great on the Chitaronne.

At the Knitting Factory Saturday night, June 25, JVC Jazz Festival New York banners hung large in the Main Space, the Tap Bar and the Old Office, and for $35 audiences were privy to 16 bands of mostly top-notch if not (yet) commercially bankable/venue-filling artists. If JVC JF-NY calling this cornucopia its own seems opportunistic, like the groups could have been presented more respectfully in concerts than in a club or paid better or promoted in JVC JF-NY ads, lighten up. JVC JF-NY has tried several times to encompass "downtown," and has seldom gotten it right. I don't know what the big fest did to help this mini-fest (none of the above), but here we were, and it was pretty good.

Extractions: When Howard Stern, radio's Ambassador for Questionable Taste, hit the local airwaves last week on WAQX-FM (95X), his old friend Ed Levine was underwhelmed. "I wouldn't walk across the street to spit on his shoes," said Levine, owner and general manager of WKRL-FM 100.9 (K-Rock) and WTKW-FM 99.5 (TK99), 95X's competitors. Best Ever Radio Fights Although Stern's on-air sidekick Robin Quivers had called Levine a jerk, Stern reflected that at least he was a jerk who stood up for his guys. Levine said their relationship over the following two years was great, but that Stern was not at all successful on the D.C. station. According to Levine, in 1990 the two sat next to each other at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction dinner and chatted on the phone weekly until Levine left Infinity in 1991 to form his Radio Corporation, which now owns stations in Onondaga, Oswego and Oneida counties. Levine has gone up against Stern before in Albany and other markets, and eventually formed a radio consulting firm called Stern Busters to help stations compete against Stern's syndicated morning show. Levine claims Stern's entry into a new market always result in a big buck for the foulmouthed host, but not necessarily for the station he's on. While New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Cleveland have proven successful for Stern's morning shenanigans, Levine said, the shtick doesn't fly without the critical mass of a big-city mentality. "Howard creates a lot of problems on the sales side, on the revenue side, especially in a smaller market," Levine said. "Howard can add some young male listeners in the morning, but he can destroy stations after 10 a.m. to the point where they have to change formats. In Buffalo, he was very quietly taken off the air. His track record in upstate New York is suspect at best."

Extractions: Fine Singing in Blue Jelly Also see Richard's reviews of Amnesia and In the Garden On Monday nights through February 18, The Plush Room, San Franciscos premiere night club, is presenting the musical monologue Blue Jelly , a one hour musical venture starring one of the Bay Areas best chanteuses Lesley Hamilton. Blue Jelly is an adaptation by Gene Price of the novel by former Rolling Stone writer Debby Bull. The cabaret monologue is interwoven with 15 pop and cabaret standards from the pens of such great composers as Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Maury Yeston, Rodgers and Hart, and Stephen Schwartz. There are also songs by Bart Howard, Josh Rubins, William Roy and even Tom Waits. The show has a subtitle that seems more appropriate to the saga of our heroine: Love Lost and the Lessons of Canning , which is the basis for Debby Bulls story. Dressed in a simple black outfit, Lesley comes onto the stage, where sits a cloth-covered table set with Mason jars of home made jelly. Lesley has just broken up with what must have been a first class jerk - and a cheap jerk, since for Valentine's Day she received sample perfume strips taken from magazines. She hates being alone as she sings Bart Howards Where Do You Think Youre Going? Our gal finds solitude very difficult until she finds her mothers Canning Diary on the making of jelly, and somehow this helps her through the first crisis. She goes on an odyssey that includes a hiking trip to some Indian cliff dwellings, to various seminars that sound suspiciously like EST, and an unrewarding affair with a 10 year younger country western singer who travels Holiday Inns in the Southwest. Intertwined with this soliloquy are recipes for canning various jams and jellies. However, at the end it looks as if the woman will find happiness in her own home town.
