Extractions: A B C D ... Z D Giusto Dacci Italian composer and pianist Parma, 1840 - Parma, 1915 Dacci was educated at the Royal Parma School of Music which he entered as a boarder at the age of eleven, and it was here he spent the rest of his working life as piano teacher, professor of harmony and eventually, in 1875, director and Composer in Residence. As director of the School he also kept a personal diary which is rich on anecdotes and gossip about the School and the city. When the School was closed in 1888 to make way for the new Music Conservatory he was passed over as director by Verdi in favor of Giovanni Bottesini and later Franco Faccio, but nevertheless Dacci remained on the staff as teacher of composition until his retirement in 1899. As a bachelor Dacci bequeathed his estate to the Conservatory to provide prizes for deserving students. His perhaps most prominent pupil of composition was Arturo Toscanini. There were som clashes between teacher and student - already then showing his iron will. Toscanini used some of his time of to play cello in an opera orchestra which he was not supposed to and at some other time he participated in a revolt among the students refusing to get out of their beds to go to morning mass. With Toscanini these thing only resulted in reprimands and not expulsion - Dacci obviously didn't want to loose his best student.

Extractions: Culled from various TV appearances 1959-1964, this assemblage of Great pianists makes fascinating viewing, a visual and auditory delight that bring back cherished memories of keyboard idols and giants in repertory in which they flourish. They video mixes solo and collaborative performances by the artists. Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau (1902-1991) opens with the last movement of Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto in solid, Prussian style, befitting Arrau's German pedagogy. Jorge Bolet changes the mood considerably, rending up a suave interpretation of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue under one of the composer's acolytes, Paul Whiteman. The most beguiling moment comes when actor Burgess Meredith introduces the fifteen-year-old Lorin Hollander (b. 1944) to play Chopin's popular waltz in C-sharp Minor, then the piece that had got the New York critics agog, the last movement from Saint-Saens' "Egyptian" Concerto. More Saint-Saens from Philippe Entremont (b. 1934) in the familiar C Minor Concerto, the finale, with its durable cross between folk tune and church hymn. The last two American pianists, Byron Janis (b. 1928) and Grant Johannesen (b. 1921), each get two concertos: Johannesen has the last movement of the Gershwin Concerto in F and a silky opening movement from the ultimate charmer, the Grieg Concerto in A Minor. Janis plays the last movement of the Rachmaninov Third Concerto, and the most "risky" piece in this conservative environment, the finale from the Prokofiev Third Concerto, Op. 26.

Extractions: Publicist, Glenn Gould Conference In the autumn of 1977, a twelve-inch copper recording was shrouded in aluminum and sealed into each of two spacecraft which were launched on a journey plotted to take them beyond our solar system. If, half a million years from now, some galactic towtruck operator should retrieve Voyager II and listen to the record, he would hear messages from former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former U.N. Secretary Kurt Waldheim, greetings in a number of our planet's languages, sounds of Earth's natural world and a number of musical selections, including Glenn Gould playing the Prelude and Fugue in C Major from the second book of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. Our extra-terrestrial listener would hear a performance by one of the earth's most gifted pianists. What he may never know is that playing the piano was only one of Gould's remarkable talents. In the final scene of Vincent Tovell's video documentary Glenn Gould: A Portrait , director and narrator Eric Till describes Gould's life as "very much akin to a fugue, with its extraordinary overlapping of subjects: the fact that he was as great a writer as he was a pianist; as great a broadcaster as he was a musician and philosopher."

The most ambitious of his recent releases is "The Universe Will Provide," an orchestral opus Keneally recorded last year in Holland with Amsterdam's 52-piece Metropole Orkest.
