Angela Hewitt (Piano) - Short Biography The Canadian pianist, angela hewitt, was born into a musical family (her father angela hewitt then studied with French pianist JeanPaul Sévilla (piano, http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/Hewitt-Angela.htm
Extractions: Hewitt performed with distinction in several piano competitions, winning the Chopin Young Pianists' Competition (Buffalo, 1975), the piano category in the 1978 CBC Talent Festival, and the Dino Ciani Competition at La Scala, Milan, in 1980. In 1985 she had a triumphant victory in International Bach Piano Competition held in Toronto in memory of Glenn Gould. The prize for the Toronto competition included the release of a recital album on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Other competitions in which she was a top prize-winner include Bach competitions in Washington, DC (1975), and Leipzig (1976), the Schumann Competition in Zwickau, East Germany (1977), the 1978 International Viotti Competition in Vercelli, Italy, and the Casadesus Competition in Cleveland (1979). Angela Hewitts repertoire is vast, ranging from Bach to the contemporary. Her discography also includes CDs Granados, Olivier Messiaen, and most recently, the complete solo works of Ravel. She has performed with orchestras across the USA, with the Japan Philharmonic, and with every major orchestra in Canada and Australia. Highlights of 2002-2003 include appearances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (in a world premiere of a concerto by Dominic Muldowney); the Houston, Dallas, and Detroit Symphonies; her debut in Amsterdams Concertgebouw; tours with the Deutschekammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Australian Chamber Orchestra; and recitals for the
Bach's Goldberg Variations On Piano, Part 5 angela hewitt, in her liner notes, states that Variation 25 is, hewitt has become a commanding Bach pianist, and I don t think it will take very long http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NonVocal/Klavier-Goldberg-Part5.htm
Extractions: It's time for the 25 th variation commonly referred to as the "Black Pearl". Schepkin, in his Ongaku liner notes, states that this variation "constitutes the moment of absolute stasis. It is a vacuum, a "black hole" mercilessly absorbing the earthly joys and heavenly visions of the preceding pieces." Angela Hewitt, in her liner notes, states that "Variation 25 is, without a doubt, the greatest of all the variations, demanding the utmost in musicianship and expressiveness". The 26th variation is an extemely vigorous toccata which is filled with tension, excitement, and a fine degree of poetry. And it's so interesting to listen to every note as the music weaves its spell. Koroliov's is the only performance which offers the above *and* a great sense of the building up of tension and power. All the other versions, but one, are fine including both Goulds and Serkin who can't build up very much tension since they eschew the first repeat. The one deficient version comes from Tipo; the hazy sound acoustic is detrimental and Tipo's piano needed some tuning. Variation 27 is happy and playful music with the two canonic voices conversing with and at one another. Most of the versions are excellent. Hewitt states that the variation is "slightly tinged with mischief", and she plays it that way. Lifschitz, Koroliov, and Schepkin take a highly exuberant approach. Serkin is thoughtful, both Turecks are slow with pronounced staccato, and Gould II has great pacing. Not quite as good are Gould I and Yudina; Gould I is very fast and loses some poetry, while Yudina has a couple of technical difficulties. Schiff and Tipo hold up the rear. Schiff reverts to some odd mannerisms like pounding a note for no reason I can fathom; this hurts the music's flow. Tipo's interpretation has no sense of dialogue between the voices as the right hand is subservient to the left.
Pianist Plays Bach Concertos With A Flourish - The Boston Globe LENOX angela hewitt s recordings of the complete keyboard works of Bach The Canadian pianist, who turned 47 a few days ago, cuts a striking figure http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/articles/2005/08/05/pianist_plays_bach_c
Extractions: Today's Globe Opinion Magazine Education ... Living / Arts CLASSICAL NOTES August 5, 2005 LENOX Angela Hewitt's recordings of the complete keyboard works of Bach for Hyperion have won her an enthusiastic international public. The latest volume, the concertos, recorded with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, appeared on the Billboard classical chart soon after it was released in America last month. Hewitt and the orchestra are supporting the CDs with a tour that brought them to Tanglewood Wednesday night. The Canadian pianist, who turned 47 a few days ago, cuts a striking figure onstage. She's tall, and her face recalls a young Queen Elizabeth II, if one can imagine Her Majesty in a dress ripped off the back of Joan Crawford; it was clingy, glittery, and electric blue, with matching shoes. The intersections of the straps across her back created a grid for a game of tick-tack-toe. There was intelligence, vitality, wit, and dynamic control in Hewitt's playing of the fast movements of Bach's D-minor and F-minor concertos, but she tended to poke at the piano. This was good for articulation, but bad for tone, which sounded both harsh and small. This was a far cry from the responsive sound of the Fazioli instrument she currently favors for her recordings. The orchestra, 18 players, often bore down on her and sometimes even drowned her out. In the long line of the slow movement of the F-minor Concerto, ravishingly spun out by the pianist, accompanied only by pizzicato strings, one could finally understand why she has become a musical icon in England and in Canada.

Extractions: Crotchet Delivered at breakfast time and straight onto the CD player, the Italian Concerto was just the thing to start the day! The Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt Messiaen The Italian Concerto is one of Bach's happiest works, with dancing movements framing a profound Andante . Hewitt finds just the right airy touch and tone, and she can be heard to think the music along; no automatic pilot or interpretation set in concrete. There are occasional little expressive surges, not possible on the harpsichord, but never beyond tasteful boundaries. They sound as if they would differ from performance to performance with the feeling of the moment. The half hour French Overture is a grand affair, its Overture 12 minutes long, with strongly dotted rhythms giving strength and nobility, followed by the usual series of short dance movements, a more substantial and moving Sarabande at their centre. The Duets are later equivalents to the 2-part Inventions, composed

Angela Hewitt has made these 2 CD's even more worthy by adding all 18 Little Preludes, the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, and the Sonata in D minor. The Sonata is very interesting because it is Bach's transcriptions of one of the solo violin works. I'm especially pleased, as a beginning/intermediate pianist, to have such a sympathethic recording of the Little Preludes. Ms. Hewitt's recording of the Inventions and Sinfonias is also excellent. Jordan Sayers said: Angela Hewitt has quickly become my favorite contemporary pianist due to her exquisite recordings of Bach's keyboard works. One of my pet-peeves with any keyboard recording (whether it be piano, harpsichord, clavichord) is the sound engineering. Thus far, I can not find fault with any of the several Hewitt cds I own: the microphone distance, reverb, etc. are perfect, better than most cds (and I have nearly nine-hundred) This two-disc set also includes Sonata in D Minor (BWV 964), the Twelve and Six Little Preludes (which never sounded so nice on piano) and Prelude and Fugue in A Minor (BWV 894). From my listening experience, one can't go wrong with any of Hewitt's Bach recordings.

Extractions: English Suite #6 in D minor, BWV 811 Format: Compact Disc Record Label: Deutsche Grammophon Catalog Number: Year Released/Recorded: Total Playing Time: Comments: From the booklet with the CD. Although no pianist who plays the music of Bach today can ignore the highly individual style of Glenn Gould, there is little evidence of direct influence to be found in Angela Hewitt's playing. She employs a varied touch, makes sensitive use of legato, and generally avoids the pointillistic approach that Gould preferred. But she sees no contradiction in playing the music Bach composed for the harpsichord on a modern piano. Prior to her Toronto Bach Competition victory, she was placed First in Italy's Viotti Competition (1978) and was a top prizewinner in the International Bach competitions of Leipzig and Washington DC, as well as the Schumann Competition in Zwickau, the Casadesus Competition in Cleveland, and the Dino Ciani Competition at la Scala, Milan. In her formative years she also studied violin, recorder, singing, and classical ballet. At nine she gave her first recital at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music where she studied from 1964 to 1973. Miss Hewitt then studied with French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa from which she earned her Bachelor of Music degree at the age of eighteen.
