Extractions: The concert will be preceded by an interview with Shostakovich's former student, the St Petersburg-based composer Boris Tishchenko. Shostakovich completed Symphony No 4 in 1936, but had just fallen into disfavour with Communist Party officials over his opera 'Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District' and was forced to suppress it. The symphony was not performed until December 1961, eight years after Stalin's death. The event on Sunday starts at 7pm, when the writer John Riley will talk about the history of the symphony with Boris Tishchenko. Then, at 7.45pm, pianist Colin Stone will play Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues 6, 7 and 15 before Rustem Hayroudinoff performs a selection of Shostakovich's theatre music. After a brief interval, Stone and Hayroudinoff will perform Symphony No. 4 in its arrangement for two pianos. (Hayroudinoff and Stone are the performers featured on the first ever recording of the symphony, which was released by Chandos in March 2005.) Gadgets Though soloists in very different Dvorak concertos, Rustem Hayroudinoff and James Ehnes take surprisingly similar approaches, both consistently shying away from anything that might be thought too emphatic or exaggerated. The common denominators are Gianandrea Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic, so presumably it is Noseda's clear-sighted, carefully scaled accompaniment to both works that generates the similarities. Some may prefer a more barnstorming account of the Piano Concerto to the fleetness of Hayroudinoff, who prepared his own version of the problematic solo part which steers a middle path between Dvorak's original and the subsequent performing texts. On its own terms, though, the performance is undeniably effective, just as Ehnes's perfectly centred, intensely musical violin playing demands attention, even if neither performance seems to scale the heights of the greatest on disc.
