Adams brought the right degree of agitated nervousness and melancholic grace to the opening movement of Haydns Symphony no.44 in E minor, 'Trauer' , while the Menuetto was conducted and played with a sprightly, cool restraint. The core of the performance was the tranquil Adagio which was played with great elegance, with the string sounds giving the impression of a distant ghostly haze (an effect which was to return in Adams Transmigration of Souls which ended the concert). The final movement was conducted with attack and brio, with the strings assuming a weightier, sinewy toughness. Throughout the entire symphony, the reduced BBC Symphony Orchestra played with immaculate precision. Piano Concerto No.3

Extractions: French pianist Hélène Grimaud, acknowledged by critics for her interpretation of Rachmaninov and Schumann, has a passion for wolves. She reveals this in her recently published diary, Variations Sauvages, that leave readers wondering if the 33-year-old virtuoso is eccentric. Sometimes she has a meal or practices in the wolves enclosure, or even lies down for a moment among them. She even writes that her two passions the piano and wolvesare essential to maintain her sense of balance. Music, of course, came before her fascination for wolves. Thanks to her talent, her vocation as a pianist was evident at a very early age. Grimaud began her musical career at the age of eight in Aix-en-Provence (in the south east of France). By age 12, she was accepted at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris where she had classes twice a week with the great professor Jacques Rouvier. She was hardly 15 when she won a first prize for piano and recorded Rachmaninovs Concerto No. 2 for which she also won a prize. This success allowed her to enter the third and final grade of the Conservatoire (academy of music) only open to the best candidates. At 18, during her first concert in Paris, she played Liszt and Schumann and the critics were filled with enthusiasm, thus confirming her position as a first rate concert artiste.

The tour was led by Alexander Vedernikov , Music Director of the Bolshoi Theatre and a member of the RNO Conductor Collegium. RNO Associate Conductor Dmitri Liss conducted the February 2 concert in Wilmington, Delaware. Acclaimed pianist was the featured soloist for the tour. The tour began in Florida January 25 with a sold out concert at Sarasota's Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, and proceeded to three other Florida cities.
