Extractions: Tim and I spent the entire day, yesterday, making final edits to our upcoming "Rugged Elegance Companion" guides. The Financial District selections and changes are now complete. Union Square and The Theatre District/Nob Hill will be done today and tomorrow. What San Francisco treasures we have found! After a long day of walking and talking with establishment owners, we treated ourselves to our annual dinner at the Campton Place Bar followed by a night at the symphony. A tradition we've had for the past eight years has been to go Christmas shopping in Union Square and then end up at Campton Place . Unfortunately, that indulgence went by the wayside, this past season. However, we made up for it last night. While I miss the bar's old ambiance, there is a warmth about the recent Campton Place remodel designed by Hong Kong's Sylvia Chang.

Extractions: At once abstract and deeply personal, chamber music has always been the medium through which the great composers have expressed their most urgent feelings and desires. From Beethoven's anguished and exalted "Song of Thanksgiving" (Op. 132) and Smetana's vividly autobiographical string quartet ("From My Life") to the heartfelt outpourings of songs by Dvorak and Debussy, these works are windows on the artist's most private musings - their most intimate voices. The University of Chicago Presents' 2002-03 season is marked by these "intimate voices" from artists worldwide. Whether it be the haunting sound of a solo cello or the seamless beauty of mezzo-soprano Susan Graham on the Chamber Music Series, the season is bursting with song. Once again, the world's most revered musicians grace the stage of Mandel Hall performing music that speaks to us all. As always, we are committed to presenting significant, even daring, debuts, giving Chicagoans their first opportunity to hear some of the musicians that have emerged at the vanguard of music-making worldwide. The intimate circle of composer, performer and listener is only closed when you come to share in the experience. Don't miss a note!

An exciting pianist and a clever program of creations inspired by found objects grace this weekend's Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concerts at Hilbert Circle Theatre. Schumann's A minor Piano Concerto Fratres , a contemporary chamber music work reset for string orchestra, was influenced by Renaissance sounds. Finally, after intermission came another Romantic-era piece, the Brahms String Quartet, but it was orchestrated by Schoenberg, a modernist. Fratres Fratres deliberately and treated the long decrescendo at the end of the piece gently, so that the tapering off into silence was dramatic. The concert is part of Hancher's 1996-97 IES Industries Piano Series. The program features three sets of compositions by Brahms the Fantasies, op. 116; the Intermezzi, op. 117; and the Six Pieces, op. 118. Grimaud will also perform Beethoven's Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, op. 110. Grimaud commanded the attention of the music world at the age of 15, when her recording of the treacherous Rachmaninoff second piano concerto was released. Critics were nearly dumbstruck by the teenager's masterful grasp of a piece with such daunting technical and musical demands. A second recording of music by Liszt, Chopin and Schumann quickly followed, confirming that a major new talent was on the scene. The critic of England's Gramophone magazine concluded, "It's a long time since I've encountered a young artist with so intuitive an understanding of what music is all about. . . . She just seems to know where every phrase is going, and why." The American Record Guide hailed her as "one of the most striking pianistic personalities to appear on recordings in recent years. . . . burning with passion and poetry allied to effortless, rock-solid pianism."

Extractions: Kathmandu, Wednesday, 10 January 2001 INTERNATIONAL Berlin: Regional selfishness blocking economic upturn -Heinz Boschek, IN-Press, Germany This thinking also formed part of the decision taken this (read last years) spring by the aero-engine manufacturer BMW Rolls Royce-BRR- to expand its capacities in Dahlewitz, Brandenburg, and to fully relocate its management from Oberyrsel near Frankfurt/Main to the neighboring part of Berlin at the end of 1998. BRR director Klaus Nittinger had this to say: "here we have room for our expansion plans and, as Berlin develops in to an airport hub, we have an important market on our doorstep. Berlin and Brandenberg are basically condemned by nature to have synergies". Jurgen Linde, the minister in Potsdam, regrets that the Grand Coalition of CDU and SPD which is governing Berlin is n able to contribute to a responsible policy for the region as a whole e.g. for an integrated public transport system for Berlin and Brandenberg. A survey by the DIW shows clearly that, for example, that there is a high degree of integration between manufacturing companies based around Berlin and nearby suppliers. No matter what the public administrations of Berlin and Brandenberg are doing to harm each other, every second company in the area surrounding Berlin prefers to purchase upstream goods from other firms in the area or directly from Berlin. The unity of the economic area has become a reality and is far ahead of the political situation. So the pressure is growing. It looks like that there will indeed be a second attempt to merge the two states in 2004.

For Boulez, Bartok has always been a precursor of the avant-garde style that Boulez himself has pursued. Not surprisingly, Boulez tends to emphasize the spiky, dissonant, modernistic aspects of Bartok's music. But here, much to his credit, he seems content to play the role of accompanist, to provide firm but sympathetic support to his three soloists, each of whom has a very distinct, if not single-minded, approach to his or her chosen concerto. andante that robs it of its otherworldly strangeness and melancholy. At times, Boulez can be too literal-minded, and here Zimmerman (who should have known better) simply follows his lead.

A solo cello, supported by the remainder of the cello section playing divisi, by contrabass, and finally by soft timpani, plays an extended, cerebral. This music, darkly beautiful and absolutely singular, aptly conveys the seriousness of the dramatic events soon to unfold in the opera. After this remarkable 47-bar opening, the Overture moves into high gear, with the first of its two Allegro sections. This is signaled by the long-delayed entry of the violins, and gradually the entire band joins in. After considerable development of this material, the orchestra again dies down to a hush. Now a new theme enters, a lovely pastoral melody in the

Extractions: Conductor Vedernikov and the Russian National Orchestra were equal partners in this magnificent performance of Bartok's swan song opus. Vedernikov's long experience as an opera conductor clearly pays dividends in his concerto collaborations. (He is Music Director and Chief Conductor of Moscow's Bolshoi Theater and former Music Director of the Stanislavsky Music Theater.) The silken Russian National strings captured the eerie gloom of the 'night music'. (This music has a 1940s film noire Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5 in E Minor Op 64 is thrice familiar orchestral fare, but there is nothing quite like Tchaikovsky played by a top rank Russian orchestra. Principal French horn Igor Makarov phrased his famous solo in the Andante cantabile con alcuna licenza with alluring romanticism. His wide vibrato had an authentic Russian sound. The wonderfully languid oboe tone of Andrey Rubtsov captured the music's tragic poignancy. In the first movement Andante-Allegro con anima , the violins (led by concertmaster Alexey Bruni) really gave their all to the waltz melody. They played with golden tone and a full, rich vibrato a string section filled with Heifetzs and Milsteins. The often discursive movement had a rhythmic tightness and drive that made the music sound fresh. Vedernikov understood the balletic quality of the Valse: Allegro moderato . One could see the dancers in the mind's eye. (Vedernikov must be a superb ballet conductor.) For once the Finale: Andante maestoso was not an overblown anticlimax but the real apotheosis of Tchaikovsky's musical argument. Vedernikov traced the agony and the ecstasy of this music with an unerring sense of rhythmic energy, dynamic contrast, and lyrical ebb and flow. The musicians responded with colorful, sensitive playing from every orchestral choir. The gorgeous sound of the cello section (under Principal Alexander Gotgelf) was exceptionally beautiful. Tchaikovsky symphonies are rarely performed this idiomatically!
