Extractions: To: PianoWomenEditor Hello Rose, I've now placed a good deal more Maryla Jonas material on my web site at: http://users.bigpond.net.au/nettheim/jonas/jonaindx.htm There are now ten items, including a discography. I re-named the original 1947 article, and have included a notice to that effect. You might like to refer just to the index, given above. The sequel to the 1947 story is sad indeed. Nigel Nettheim

Extractions: New for the page "Yesterday's Concert Pianists" Early in September a biography page for Dame Myra Hess was published at the Carolina Classical Collection , edited by Charley Moss. This is an excellent, concise article about this famous lady and she forms the inspiration for this month's Editorial Musings. Nigel Nettheim has expanded his offerings about Maryla Jonas into an index listing several rare articles about her life. This past month two readers (see Letters to the Editor ) introduced me to two great pianists from the past who have been neglected: Etelka Freund (b. Hungary, 1879; d. Zurich, May 27, 1977) and Lubka Kolessa (b. Lvov, Ukraine, May 19,1904; d. Toronto, Canada, 1997).

Extractions: If you think everything about boats and boating on DCL is just fine, youll love the (Environmental Research Management) ERM draft report. They made only two major recommendations; they were that sailing regattas and bass tournaments not be held on peak weekend hours, and that law enforcement be increased during peak hours in coves, under bridges, and in no wake areas. After the bass fishermen and the sailors got through with ERM, those recommendations were withdrawn. I think most of us would have recommended increased law enforcement, but perhaps a 70 page report makes it more believable. In fact, there were no complaints in the survey of residents and weekenders about sailboats or bass fishermen. A photograph was presented which showed the starting area of a typical weekend sailboat race start. In truth for about 40 minutes the narrow area between Turkey Neck and the south shore of Thousand Acres is often congested with a lot of sailboats on summer weekends. However other boats can pass through. ERM did not contact the sailing community and did not know the situation. The draft report presents a lot of statistics. If you are interested, and have a good computer, modem, and Internet connection it can be downloaded at

These composers rejected the Austro-German heritage in favour of French post-Impressionist methods: their melodies reflected the modality of prevailing folk idiom, harmonic style relied on a good deal of parallel motion of perfect intervals, rhythm inspired also by Arabic dance and modern Palestinian Hora, and texts drawn on the lyrical poetry of the Psalms. Indeed, The Sweet Psalmist of Israel David Joram , a major work that had to await over 45 years for its premiere, in Tel-Aviv in 1979. Amongst his piano works, an eastern flavour is found in the
