Extractions: How to Select the Right Private Piano Teacher By Felicia Wishner The successful teacher usually is a positive person, concerned with others and has chosen teaching as a career. Teaching is a personal art and it must be studied. A big misconception is that if the teacher is a great musician, he/she will also be a great teacher. This is not always true. Make sure your teacher has a proven method and a track record of success teaching the style and level of play of the student. Interview the teacher, speak with some of his/her students, and review the teaching materials. A piano teacher should present himself/herself as a professional, and you should see musical progress within a few months. Chemistry between the student and teacher is very important, so keep an eye out for a connection. Don't ever settle. Get the right teacher, especially if you are a beginner, because the beginning teacher can "make or break" a young pianist. Contents VOICE/SINGING Teacher
Extractions: Paul Ben-Haim received a conventional European musical upbringing. He was born Paul Frankenburger in Munich where his father was a lawyer. He studied piano and composition at the Munich Academy and was a renowned conductor. By 1931 he was able to devote himself increasingly to composition. When the Nazis came to power in 1933 he settled in Palestine and took the Hebraic name of Ben-Haim. It was perhaps through working as arranger and accompanist for Braha Zephira, a singer of Yemeni descent, that he became quickly attracted to oriental music, particularly the folk music of Palestine and Yemen, though he himself was at pains to point out "I dont actually take melodies. I invent them. It is now my language influenced by my surroundings." When listening to the Finale of the 2

Extractions: It has been something of a perennial joke over the last decade or so, as more and more people have discovered the Russian-American Jewish composer Leo Ornstein, noted his birthdate of 1892 or '93, and concluded that he must be dead but when did he die? The answer, incredible to report, was that until February 24, 2002, he was still alive, which makes him probably the longest-lived musician in recorded history. Not even mentioned in William Austin's until-recently definitive Music in the 20th Century , Ornstein enjoyed a vogue from about 1913 to 1925, the year of his magnum opus, the Piano Concerto. He then pretty much disappeared from the public eye, teaching in Philadelphia until his retirement in 1953, though composing (mostly piano music) well into his nineties.

Extractions: [minus optionally cuttable passages: 289 = 704] May 20, 1997 Seventy is a good number. That's how many people there were in the old Sanhedrin, which made legislative decisions for the Jewish people in Biblical times. And it's the approximate number of people that attended each of four concerts in Manhattan this month, each one featuring contemporary works by Jewish - especially Jewish women - composers. [The two events organized by women in small halls were completely filled; the others, in larger halls, less so.] For the first time in recent memory, the American Society for Jewish Music presented a concert of music written entirely by composers who were not present: Baritone Robert Abelson honored the centennial of Lazar Weiner's birth with five of his 115 Yiddish art songs. Mimi SternWolfe accompanied him, and also performed with Marshall Coid and Dan Barnett in the evocative, nigunesque-mit-freylakh piano trio "Eicha" by Maxine Warshauer, currently resident in South Carolina. Two movements from the Klezmer Clarinet Quintet by the young Argentine-Israeli Osvaldo Golijov, now living in Newton, Mass., were most impressive. Two a cappella quartets by the late Miriam Gideon (who was also memorialized in the reading of an interview conducted with her by Linda Ardito) were less so. [The Jewish Theological Seminar will honor Gideon in a concert devoted entirely to her works June 4.]

Extractions: staff writer When the upright piano arrived at Gila Goldsteins Tel Aviv home, it was supposed to be for her 9-year-old sister. But it was 4-year-old Gila who was playing songs off the radio by ear within a week. In the 35 years since, Goldsteins audiences have grown from delighted fellow kindergarteners to concert audiences worldwide. The lauded pianist will make just her second trip to San Francisco on Sunday, May 16, when she plays a solo recital of Bach, Chopin, Brahms and the Israeli composer Paul Ben-Haim at the Old First Church on Sacramento Street. It is a program chock full of a few of Goldsteins favorite things. I basically choose what I love, said the pianist in a phone interview from her New York home, where she has lived ever since her graduation from the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University in the late 1980s. I open almost every recital with Bach. Chopin is just gorgeous music, I dont know how else to describe it. It speaks to my heart. Music, it must speak to my heart. Its very difficult to describe what music does to me.
