All of their discs have been recorded to the highest standards of the day; most are 20-bit, although the most recent are 24-bit. Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938), a Polish-born pianist and composer, was considered a piano prodigy from an early age. He claimed that he had no teacher that he could remember, although he did spend time with Camille Saint-Saëns discussing theory. He wrote prolifically throughout his life, mostly for the piano. His Java Suite for solo piano, written in 1920, consists of 12 pieces, in four parts, and commemorates his impressions and feelings from his journey to Indonesia. This suite has never, until now, been recorded in its entirety. Esther Budiardjo, the performer on this disc, comes from Indonesia. She is currently completing her doctorate at the New England Conservatory of Music and has been performing publicly since 1993. This is her second disc for Pro Piano (she previously did an all-Mendelssohn album).

Extractions: Leopold Godowsky (Leopold Godowski) ( February 13 November 21 ) was a Polish pianist, composer, and teacher. He has been described as the "Pianist of Pianists". Photograph of Leopold Godowsky Godowsky was born in SozÅy , near Wilno , in what is now Lithuania . As a child, he received some lessons in basic piano playing and music theory; at age fourteen, he entered the K¶nigliche Hochschule f¼r Musik in Berlin, where he studied under Ernst Rudorff , but left after three months. Otherwise, he was self-taught. His career as a concert pianist, which eventually would take him to every continent except Australia and Antarctica, began at age ten. In , after a tour of North America, he returned to Europe, intending to study with Franz Liszt in Weimar . Upon learning of Liszt's death shortly after his return, he traveled instead to Paris , where he was befriended by the composer and pianist Camille Saint-Sa«ns , who enabled him to make the acquaintance of many leading French musicians. Saint-Sa«ns even proposed to adopt Godowsky if he would take his surname, an offer which Godowsky declined, much to the older man's displeasure. Godowsky's pedagogical activity began in at the New York College of Music . While in New York , he married Frieda Saxe and became an American citizen. In

Extractions: Par 1 According to Vladimir de Pachmann, the pianist, whose playing of Chopin has won enviable fame for him, the transcriptions made by Leopold Godowsky are not to be taken lightly. They constitute, in his opinion, some of the most important works in the literature of the pianoforte. Par 2 "I only have learned a few of Godowsky's transcriptions of Chopin." said de Pachmann last weeek to a Times reporter, "but I have played over by myself all of Godowsky's works in this direction and I can scarcely tell how great I believe it to be. His original work may not be so fine, but his transcriptions are wonderful and very difficult. Who can play them? Only a few. They demand a special technique of their own. Godowsky himself perhaps does not bring to them all the supreme qualities they need. Par 3 Par 4 Par 5 "Touring fatigues me," he said, "and that voyage was dreadful. Then when the reporters met me at the dock and asked me if I liked America I told them 'No.' That morning I did not like anything. They printed all I said about America and musical critics and what not, and, of course, I didn't mean it at all. I was sick and cross.
Extractions: HYPERION CDA67411/2 (2 CDs) [153' 02"] In order to fully appreciate what Godowsky has done it is important to know the Chopin originals (some of the greatest piano music). However, even if you are not familiar with Chopin's inspired creations as he wrote them, Godowsky's commentaries on them retain (to a greater or lesser extent) Chopin's melodies - each can be appreciated on purely musical terms as a Chopin/Godowsky collaboration. And there are some real gems here to complement what Chopin left us. That this is so is due to Hamelin. Whatever difficulties the pianist faces (and they are considerable), Hamelin has overcome them and is able to play each of Godowsky's Studies as a musical entity. It says much for Chopin's genius - and Godowsky's imagination - that it was possible, for example, for Godowsky to write seven Studies based on Chopin's Op.10/5. Each has a different character but Chopin's original is omnipresent: it's like viewing the same object from various angles and seeing a different (but related) perspective. Hyperion's booklet is a model of how to present music that isn't heavily represented in the catalogue or, in this case, only known to piano cognoscenti. Godowsky's own introduction is included along with an essay by Jeremy Nicholas (an author on Godowsky) and comments by Hamelin himself. Add the top-notch production values of Andrew Keener and superb Tony Faulkner sound and this release cannot be faulted. I did wonder though if Hyperion has missed a trick by not adding a third CD and asking Hamelin to record Chopin's 27 Etudes as well - a complete package.
Extractions: The overall scheme, originally intended as a three-section form for each piece (designed to express the life of the people (Allegro), their poetic nature (Lento) and the Dance) became a four-part form of twelve pieces, each section consisting of three pieces. All are in duple/quadruple time as is all Javanese music (just as Godowsky's "Triakontameron" and "Walzermasken" are in triple time.) The sonority of the first piece "Gamelan" pervades the whole Suite. Godowsky had certainly heard the Gamelan orchestra in the Paris Grande Exposition Universelle (1889) but had experienced it the year before, visiting Java as an impressionable youth of nineteen. In the Foreword to the Suite he wrote:

Playing Left Hand Piano Music with the exception of leopold godowsky s exploration into the innermost recesses and An article by Antonio Iturrioz, concert pianist and educator http://www.unconservatory.org/articles/lhpiano.html
Extractions: Playing Left Hand Piano Music An article by Antonio Iturrioz, concert pianist and educator P iano music written for the left hand alone evolved from either temporary or permanent handicaps of pianists, with the exception of Leopold Godowsky's exploration into the innermost recesses and possibilities of playing the piano, which involve a separate, penetrating, unbelievably ingenious look at this subject to a degree that has never been equaled. T he pianist must respect the composer's thoughts, intentions and directions of the printed score, and make a percussive instrument sing. No matter how brilliant, how intense, how passionate, how intimate or how delicate, the piano must sing. (Chopin said to his pupils, "Canta!") If one keeps this aesthetic in mind, he will eliminate the possibility of making a harsh sound or shattering an eardrum. Imagine transferring all these ideals to one hand playing. T o begin with, there is an immediate tendency to want to play louder because we are conditioned to hearing the voluminous sounds of normal two hand piano music. Therefore left hand playing is vulnerable to unfriendly sounds. We pianists must listen to ourselves with a greater degree of attentiveness than ever before. At the same tine, left hand playing enables us to be more intimate and personal (almost fragile) without as much physical effort as in normal playing. I n contrast to what the layman may think, it is more difficult to play music with one hand than with two. With two hands, one is always subservient to the other. With one hand there are never any silences. You can't rest for a moment. Everything is more exposed. You can't use the acoustical range you get with two hands.

Extractions: Famed for his piano miniatures and his fantastically elaborate transcriptions, Godowsky wrote only two large-scale original works for the piano. The huge five-movement Sonata (1910/11), one of the most imposing works of its type, is powerfully dramatic and, like most Godowsky, often very contrapuntal. It has a beautiful slow movement, a delightful scherzo, and a monumental 20-minute finale that includes a fugue on the name B-A-C-H. It deserves to be far better known. The Passacaglia was written in 1927 in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Schubert's death, and is subtitled '44 variations, cadenza and fugue on the opening theme of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony'. The piece has earned a reputation as being among the most difficult in the repertoire, partly because of Horowitz's flippant comment that it required six hands to play it - it is in fact superbly pianistic. This is the first time that these two works have appeared on the same disc. Anyone who has heard Marc-André Hamelin's Gramphone Award-winning set of Godowsky's complete Studies after Chopin's Etudes will want this equally phenomenal follow-up. The performances are spectacular.

Jeremy Nicholas examines the factors which, together with the tragedy that abruptly ended his career, have contributed towards his unjust neglect. We probably shouldn't take Horowitz too seriously; he doesn't seem to have cared for Godowsky's music at all - unlike Marc-André Hamelin, who has the phenomenal technique and razor-sharp musical intellect to succeed with this music where others usually fail, or at best give up in the attempt. "My music is not difficult", Godowsky said himself. "Too many pianists were too indolent mentally and physically to make the supreme effort."
