Se: Pluto-Profil - Emil Gilels Med Emil Gilels schmalz Gilels Emil Gilels Svjatoslav Richter Summary in English With Emil Giles we get the russian Power-pianist with Five Years Plan in his eyes and machines in his hands. In his interpretation of Bach he does not save his muscles. We must remind ourselves that he is playing a fortepiano and not an organ. The change to the softer side of Mozart and Beethoven is welcome. Gilels was the most prominent piano playing artist in the former Soviet Union before Richter and the following demons started to sweep around the world from about 1960. He owned a seldom grip of his audience and even today many will claim him to be the foremost pianist of the century. He was a 'People's Artist' and received his Lenin Prize. In this production you will sit listening to his Debussy and Ravel and wonder how great his range was in emotions.

The pianist obviously selected the pieces with which he felt the strongest identification, and he plays them lovingly, with sprightly rhythms and a rich, singing tone. Gilels was the one who identified himself as second to Sviatoslav Richter"If you think I'm something, wait until you hear Richter," he supposedly said. But this collection is just as beautiful in its way as Richter's lyric collections. Along with some of his Chopin playing, this Grieg set reminds us that Gilels was a major Romantic pianist. Contact us at evaluate@micro2media.com Back to Top of Page BIBLIOGRAPHY Sviatoslav Richter, widely regarded as one of the finest Russian pianists of the twentieth century, was born in Zhitomir, in the Ukraine, on March 20, 1915. His father, Theophile, was an organist and gave the young Sviatoslav his early musical training. Richters mother, Anna, was a talented artist who loved music and was related to the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. The young Richter was essentially self-taught and developed his exceptional technique by playing whatever music he liked. By the age of eight he was playing opera scores, including the music of Richard Wagner. He had the ability to memorize any music at sight. Richter grew up in Odessa, where his father taught at the Conservatory. Also growing up in Odessa at the same time were Emil Gilels and David Oistrakh, who would later become Richters chamber-music partner. During these years he was a repetiteur, or rehearsal pianist, in Odessa. His debut as a soloist came on February 19, 1934, at the Odessa House of Engineers. The program included the Chopin Ballade no. 4, Polonaise-fantaisie, and E Major Scherzo, as well as a selection of Nocturnes, Etudes, and Preludes, all difficult pieces. The recital was a great success and Richters career as virtuoso was under way.

After the intermission, he played works of Schubert, Chopin, and Liszt. What makes these performances unusual is the physical condition of the audience: Sofia was plagued by a flu epidemic, and the coughing during the performance of Pictures is well nigh unbearable. As the work progresses, one senses Richter driving himself inward. The more they cough, it would seem, the more demonic and unsettling the performance. Extractions: Earth-shattering Passion on a Richter Scale This month, Lionel Choi pays tribute to Sviatoslav Richter (1915 - 1997) , one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, who passed away on the 1st August. On August 1st, the music world mourned the loss of Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter, who died of a heart attack in a Moscow hospital. He was 82. Richter was a great pianist. I don't think we even need to qualify that last statement. In a world that is dominated by countless young virtuosos who make better keyboard acrobats than musicians, the passing of Richter certainly marked the tragic end to an era of piano-playing of such a special stature and personality. He had a huge, formidable technique, and it is amazing how he used it to illuminate the musical aspects of the pieces before him, breathing life and passion into every note. Richter was a storyteller, a magician. He had a bold, vivid musical imagination, one that mirrored his profound and deep love for what he did. He spoke in a unique yet sensible and powerfully poetic language, hardly ever resorting to controversy to gain attention. Indeed, each time you hear a Richter record, you just have to sit up and listen. Given the legendary status that he had long acquired, it therefore comes as a surprise that he actually had a fairly late start to his professional piano career.

His strongest 'competitor' is perhaps Vladimir Horowitz, but his weak point is the width of repertoire. Other Austro-German pianists like Backhaus Rudolf Serkin and Kempff are not comparable to Richter in this respect, too. Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter was born in Zhitomir, in Ukraine. His father(Teofil) learned piano and organ in Vienna Conservatory, but moved to Ukraine because of the illegal duel. He married one of his pupil. But our young Slava did not learn much from his father. He almost taught himself. We can't know the excat reason, but I guess there are some clue in Heinrich Neuhaus's 'The Art of piano playing'; Piano teachers are so busy teaching his pupils as to have little time for their own children. Anyway, we can hear of Slava that he can play Liszt's work at 16, and the most complex orchestral scores(e.g. Wagner) at first sight. He was enough to be called a real genius.
