The son of immigrant parents, George became one of America's first premier composers and his compositions are still used today as tool of teachers everywhere as examples of the American entrance to the musical world of Stravinsky, Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart. George had two brothers, Arthur and Ira, and one sister, Francis (Frankie). Although George is the most well known of the family, his brother Ira was also a succesful lyricist. In fact, if it weren't for Ira's interest in music, George's parents would not have purchased the family's first piano. Ira was going to study the piano when the instrument was brought into the family home, but it was George who took the immediate interest in it and immediately began to successfully play by ear. His parents invested some piano lessons in him and George began to study seriously at the young age of 12 years. Early Professional Career (1916-1924) George began his professional career in "Tin Pan Alley," a location in New York City where aspiring composers and song writers would bring their scores to a publisher in hopes of selling the tunes for a modest amount of cash. As a "song plugger" for the Jerome Remick Company, George was exposed to thousands of songs, which gave him a better idea for what songs had a successful quality.

Marking time in simple-song form, 32 bars, and 2 musical phrases, from which I could hear music in the rhapsodic color of blue. A type of folk song, originating from African-American culture and ethnicity, with a 20th-century melancholy of repeated notes. But one without a closing section. A song in a seemingly endless, unfinished symphony. A concerto with 3 movements, in which the piano stands out in bold relief, against a muted orchestral backdrop. The end result being that I can only hear the piano, but no other instruments are significant. The piano becomes a harmonica, resounding in two or more independent, but related melodic parts. The sound which eminates is sometimes dissonant, not pleasing to the ear. At other times, its melody produces a glissando of continuous or sliding movements on a too-rapid scale. A barbershop quartet, which sings off key, and is not in harmony. An unwritten improv, which gradually gets worse, as its tone-deafness increases.

Remick as Tin Pan Alley's youngest-ever song-plugger for $15.00 a week, all the while trying his hand at composition. His first published song (in 1916) was When You Want 'Em You Can't Get 'Em, which did not catch on, but that same year Sigmund Romberg used another Gershwin song in a show. This was also the year in which Gershwin began making piano rolls (many under a pseudonym). George left Remick in 1917 to travel the vaudeville circuit as a pianist. Next he was hired to write songs for Max Dreyfus, head of the publishing house T.B. Harms, and he toured as accompanist for Nora Bayes. Gershwin's first Broadway show, La, La, Lucille, ran for one hundred performances in 1919, the same year that Al Jolson heard Swanee (written in 1917) and added it to his touring show. Swanee was a tremendous hit which sold over two million records its first year, and George was well on his way to fame and fortune. For the next five years he wrote the music for George White's Scandals, and in the 1922 Scandals he included a one-act opera called Blue Monday. This opera lasted only a single performance, but it was the first serious music by the successful young composer (who by now had entered New York society and become an equally successful man about town).
