Extractions: Reviewer: David Roberts for Theatre Reviews Limited Interest in George Gershwin never wanes. His music (and that of his brother Ira) is so much a part of the history of American musical theatre that it is difficult to imagine what contemporary musical theatre would be like (including "The Producers") had it not been for the brothers Gershwin. And now for the first time in theatrical history the Gershwin heirs have granted the rights to create the role of America's musical icon, George Gershwin, on stage. These rights have been awarded to pianist, actor, composer, writer and singer Hershey Felder and the heirs of George Gershwin could not have put their trust in more capable and worthy hands. From the time the lights go up on Mr. Felder on the stage of the Helen Hayes Theatre until the end of his "George Gershwin Alone" Hershey Felder carefully and respectfully portrays the life of George Gershwin as it has never been represented before. Alone. Whether Mr. Felder's George Gershwin is relating the stories of how he came to write "Swanee" or "Porgy and Bess" or how he used his time as a "piano pimp" to determine what "worked" and what didn't work musically, he helps us understand, perhaps for the first time, that ultimately George Gershwin was successful because of his particular genius.

Extractions: George Gerwshwin in 1918 George Gershwin Born; Brooklyn, New York, 26 Sept 1898 Died; Hollywood, California, 11 July 1937 George was a great admirer of the comedian Ed Wynn and it is at this time, in honor of him, that Gershwin changed the end of his last name. He studied with the American composers Rubin Goldmark, Henry Cowell, and Wallingford Riegger and with the Russian-born composer and theorist Joseph Schillinger. Gershwin wrote his first major successful musical work in 1924, Rhapsody in Blue. Much of his inspiration for the work came during a train ride to Boston. According to Gershwin, "with its steely rhythms, its rattlety-bang . . . I suddenly heard - and even saw on paper - the complete construction of the rhapsody from beginning to end. I heard it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America - of our vast melting pot, of our unduplicated national pep, of our blues, our metropolitan madness." The score was completed in a week upon his return to New York. The original setting was not for a large orchestra, but for a much smaller jazz ensemble. Gershwin himself performed at the piano at the world premiere. Rhapsody in Blue led Gershwin to write more pieces for piano and orchestra including the Concerto in F

Extractions: You havent got it in you to be a musician, George. Take my word for it. I know (Ewen, 14). These words stated by Maxie Rosenzweig (otherwise known as Max Rosen), violinist and friend of George Gershwin, are ironic to say the least. It is quite possible that George Gershwin single-handedly changed the way that people view American music. His music carries with it a timeless quality, one that is easily identified and is appropriated by those who like popular and serious music alike. His influences are great, ranging from other classical and popular composers to the likes of Duke Ellington and other jazz greats. In 1915, Gershwin became a student of the legendary Hungarian teacher, Edward Kilenyi, who taught him advanced theory and harmony. Gershwin once stated that Kilenyi was the second most important influence in his musical life, a key in helping shape his musical development (Ewen, 32-34). Gershwin left Tin Pan Alley after two years and became a pianist at Foxs City Theater where he received an increase in pay, receiving $25 per hour. In 1916, Gershwin sold and published his first song When You Want Em, You Cant Get Em with lyrics provided by Murray Roth. According to Gershwin, Roth got an advance of fifteen dollars for the song. I waived an advance, wanting my royalties in a lump sum. After some time I went to Von Tilzer and asked for a little cash for the song. He handed me five dollars. And I never got a cent more from him (Jablonski, 15).

Email Newsletter September 18-24, 2003 theater by David Anthony Fox George Gershwin Alone gives us the glamour of Manhattan and Hollywood in the 1930s, a generous selection of beloved songs and even a little triumph-and-tragedy from the old neighborhood. " Rent This is the music that made America great!" The title of Hershey Felder's show (he wrote the script, and is also the sole performer) is a bit of a misnomer: While Gershwin is the only character on stage, the great composer was never alone if there was a piano nearby. And when there's also an audience to charm well, this Gershwin is all showman, a veteran ham. Storytelling comes as naturally to him as making music. They're good stories, too, even if many are familiar. Rapturous acclaim for "Rhapsody In Blue" provides one of the high points of Gershwin's life; critical misperceptions that dogged other works, and a stalled romance with Kay Swift, are among the bleaker moments. The saddest story comes last: the composer's lifelong headaches and avoidance of proper treatment. At age 38 and at the height of his creative powers, Gershwin was dead of an inoperable brain tumor. It's the music that keeps things in a major key, and Felder provides a generous sampling of Gershwin tunes, from Broadway standards ("The Man I Love," "Swanee") to the lofty melodies of

Extractions: forums ... Email Newsletter September 4-10, 2003 artpicks by Steve Cohen theater Hershey Felder is almost a reincarnation of George Gershwin. He's a pianist with black, wavy hair, is the son of Yiddish-speaking immigrants from Europe and is approximately 38, the age at which the composer died of a brain tumor in 1938. Five years ago Felder conceived of a show where he would not only play and sing Gershwin's music, but also recreate his persona. The Gershwin heirs had never allowed anyone to do that, but they finally gave Felder their imprimatur, and his production of George Gershwin Alone opened on Broadway in 2001. He brings it to Philadelphia to start the Prince Music Theater's season on Sept. 10. Although he wasn't religious, Gershwin's Jewish background was influential in his work. "It Ain't Necessarily So" from Porgy and Bess , for example, uses the traditional tune of the blessing for reading the Torah. Researching the life of the composer, Felder discovered many gems that he will perform, in addition to favorites such as "Rhapsody in Blue." Early in his career, Felder appeared in

He was the second of four children from a close-knit Russian-Jewish immigrant family. George became one of America's first premier composers and his compositions are still used today as tool of teachers everywhere as examples of the American entrance to the musical world of Stravinsky, Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart. G eorge had two brothers, Arthur and Ira, and one sister, Francis (Frankie). Although George is the most well known of the family, his brother Ira was also a successful lyricist. In fact, if it weren't for Ira's interest in music, George's parents would not have purchased the family's first piano. Ira was going to study the piano when the instrument was brought into the family home, but it was George who took the immediate interest in it and immediately began to successfully play by ear he was only 10 years old. His parents invested some piano lessons in him and George began to study seriously at the young age of 12 years. His teacher was R. Goldmark and the well-known pianist and composer Charles Hambitzer. By 1914 he was working at the Jerome Remick publishing house.

Extractions: George Gershwin was one of the most influential American composers. He impacted the music of his time and today with his unique rhythms, melodies, and style. George's parents were Jewish-Russian immigrants. His father's name was Morris Gershovitz, and his mother's was originally Rose Bruskin. They were married in 1895, and Americanized their name to Gershwin. They had four children. Ira was born on December 6, 1896. George was their second son, born on September 26, 1898. Arthur and Francis were next in line in 1900 and 1906 (Rowley 1). George's birthplace was Brooklyn, New York. His father was a somewhat unsuccessful entrepreneur, and the family had moved twenty-eight times by the time George was eighteen (Penumbra 1). George's childhood was different from what many might think. He was out-going and energetic, but a trouble maker at school. He showed no interest in music. The family went bankrupt in 1914 and moved to Coney Island, where George became known as a fighter. He stole fruit, pretzels, and bagels from the local shops (Rowley 1). He was an outdoors boy, who didn't care for indoor activities (Penumbra 1). Even though he didn't seem to care for it, music had a profound effect on George. Once, while passing an arcade, he heard a mechanical piano playing Rubinstein's "Melody in F." He seemed to be put in a trance. A few years later, when he heard Maxie Rosenzweig playing the violin, he waited outside the school for an hour in the rain just to meet the older boy. Eventually, the two became the best of friends, and Maxie taught George everything he knew about music (Rowley 1). Unfortunately, he also told George that he didn't have any musical aptitude, but he didn't let that stop him. George's love of music grew from that point on (Penumbra 1-2).
