Extractions: . . . . our conjectures would be quite different if we were living in the 1920s instead of the 1980s. Similarly 18th- and 19th-century descriptions of tempo rubato make a very different sort of sense if we take early, rather than late, 20th-century style as the starting point for comparison. My own very strong suspicion is that many of the habits preserved in early gramophone records had their origins at least as far back as Beethoven, and in some cases earlier. This is something to argue about, but one central point is indisputable: the styles of the early 20th century did not arise overnight. For this reason, if for no other, it is time for historically minded performers to start considering the implications of early gramophone records." Robert Philip

The work is heavy laden with dark octave chords which allows the pianist, Piers Lane, to exploit the darker regions of the work as seen in the second movement of the piece. It is here that Lane draws you into the music and into the contemplative nature of the work.

Extractions: Photo: The Estonian National Culture Foundation Käbi Laretei was born in Tartu on 14 July 1922, the daughter of a diplomat. Her father Heinrich Laretei had been the ambassador of the Estonian Republic in Moscow in 1926-1928, then in Kaunas, Lithuania, and directly before the Second World War in Stockholm, Sweden. After the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940, the Laretei family remained in Sweden as immigrants. Laretei began her music studies at the Tallinn Conservatory of Music where she studied from 1936-40. Since, foreigners were not permitted to study at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, Käbi Lareteis musical education continued privately: theory and composition with Estonian composer Eduard Tubin (1947-1950), piano with Gottfried Boon and Annie Fischer. She has also supplemented her piano studies from 1946-1951: participating in several summer courses with Edwin Fischer during the Lucerne festival, studying with Anna Hirzel-Langenhan at the Schloss Berg and studying at the Basel Conservatory with Paul Baumgartner; later, she studied several times with Marialuisa Strub-Moresco in Stuttgart.

MS1031 - PIANO CONCERTI - John Robilette He) plays the Mozart Rondo much the way Schnabel or edwin fischer would have. American Record Guide. ALSO AVAILABLE on MSR CLASSICS http://www.msrcd.com/Robiletti/Robilette.html
Extractions: Rossen Milanov Shipping Options USPS Priority Mail UPS Ground International Air It is always refreshing to encounter an artist of individuality, such as the American pianist John Robilette , whose style recalls the old school of Cortot and Schnabel, with whose assistants he has studied. Since his Kennedy Center debut in 1984, Robilette has explored some unusual projects, including directing a Government sponsored international artists programme; and repertoire, aspects of which are evident here, especially the intriguing idea behind his recording of Beethovens Fourth Concerto. The inclusion of cadenzas by both Beethoven and Saint-Saens to be chosen and programmed in, at will, by the listener, enables an unique exploration of the relationship between the Classic and Romantic pianistic styles, enabling an aural comparison that highlights fascinating similarities and contrasts of stylistic strategies. For this feature alone, the CD is of compelling interest.
