Extractions: Eighteen consecutive editions for a music festival is no mean feat, especially if we go back further in time to the musical tradition that had been firmly rooted in Sorrento. During the 1970s Sorrento had already played host to the "Incontri Musica1i Internazionali" out of which today's Summer Music Festival emerged in 1985. The success of this festival is even more remarkable if we think of the many performances that were hurriedly conceived in the early 1980s, only to be then lost in the troubled waters of the 1990s. The "Sorrento Summer Music Festival", organised by the Sorrento-Sant' Agnello Tourism Board, is sponsored by the Campania Region Department for Tourism and the Performing Arts. It also enjoys the patronage of the Council of Ministers and the Sorrento municipal authorities. With Maurizio Pietrantonio at the helm, as musician, artistic director, the brains and its driving force, the Festival has never lost sight of its course.

We found him quite delightful, exceedingly modest, happy to be talking about pianists of the past (he was very fond of Fischer and Cortot), and smoking up a storm. Though clearly tired from his evening efforts, he left the unmistakeable impression that, had there been the opportunity, he might easily have served his enraptured listeners with yet another seven encores. On this recording she plays outstanding early 20th century works: Igor Stravinskys Three movements from Petrouchka (Danse russe, Chez Petrouchka and La semaine grasse) and Alexander Scriabins irresistible Fantasy in B Minor, as well as his Sonata No.3 in F-sharp Minor. Gwhyneth Chen captures perfectly both Stravinskys virtuoso percussiveness and Scriabins tender, soulful melancholy. SANTA BARBARA LISZT ALBUM EROICA JDT3092. The brilliant Zeynep Ucbasaran started her music studies at age four at the Istanbul Conservatory and later studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Awarded second prize at the 1996 Los Angeles Liszt Competition and an honorable mention in the same competition in 2000, she has given piano recitals in many countries and currently lives in Santa Barbara, California, where this outstanding CD was recorded. The works are Les cloches de Genéve, Funérailles, Eroica, Trübe Wolken/Nuages gris, Fantasie und Fuge über das Thema B-A-C-H, and Schubert Lied Transcriptions: Erstarrung, Aufenthalt, Ave Maria and Rhapsodie espagnole.
