Extractions: The Greek pianist Gina Bachauer was born in Athens in 1910. Unlike many of her female colleagues of the time, she was a renowned exponent of the great warhorses of the repertoire including concertos by Brahms and Rachmaninov and, as can be heard on this disc, Busoni's monumental solo transcriptions of Bach and Liszt. Like many of her generation, the launch of her international career was delayed by the Second World War (which she spent in the Middle East, giving some 600 concerts for the Allied Forces) and it was only at the end of the 1940s that she began to receive true recogition. HMV was quick to spot her brilliance and signed her to an exclusive contract and the fruits of her earliest recordings (1949-51) can be heard on this disc. It was unusual to encounter her in Mozart but she offers here a spirited performance of the Coronation Concerto where she is accompanied by the New London Orchestra with Alec Sherman (later to be her husband) on the podium. Extractions: (from a conversation with his pupil and friend, pianist Alberto Neumann) "Ho ascoltato recentemente un pianista alla radio che mi ha impressionato molto: Sergio Fiorentino, lei lo conosce?" (Recently I listened to a pianist on the radio who impressed me very much: Sergio Fiorentino, do you know him?) T hese short statements by two pianists, considered by many as belonging to the league of the very greatest, will come as a major surprise to all those interested in the art of playing the piano. One can safely assume that both men did know what they were talking about. Contrary to their knowledge, until recent years, the name of Sergio Fiorentino was virtually unknown to a wider public. After tremendous success on concert stages of many European countries and through appearances in New York City and in South America in the late forties and early fifties, a chain of events caused Fiorentino to retreat from international concert life, dedicating most of his time to teaching at the Conservatory "San Pietro a Majella" in his native city and giving only the occasional concert and radio appearance in Italy.

Extractions: IGOR KIPNIS The career of Naples-born Sergio Fiorentino (1927-98) commenced actively just before the 1950s, after he had been singled out as a prize winner in competitions in Monza [1947, the jury headed by Michelangeli], Geneva [1947, joint second], Naples [1948 Concorso Rossomandi, first] and Genoa [1948, first]. Following several European and American tours (his American debut was in1953), he suffered spinal damage when his plane had to make a forced landing in South America, although he eventually recovered well enough to continue his concert career. In the mid-fifties, a time when he appeared again in public, notably in England, he also began to record for a variety of companies, including Saga (discs which I later regretted not having obtained). The routine of touring, however, began to pall, and for the next decades Fiorentino spent his time teaching at [his alma mater ] the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples, where he held the post of professor and from which he retired in 1993. Gradually he began performing again, especially in Germany, from which several of the radio broadcasts issued by APR emanate. Having heard those initial 1993 recordings ( APR 7036 , 2 CDs) of Bach-Busoni, Beethoven's Op 110, Chopin's Second Sonata, Scriabin's Fourth, the Schumann Fantasy, and a host of encore lollipops such as the Strauss-Godowsky Fledermaus Igor Kipnis , November 5th 1999

About Danacord Another estimable pianist currently in the Buhl camp is Geoffrey DouglasMadge (remember Bengt Forsberg, sergio fiorentino, Hamish Milne, Stephen Hough, http://www.danacord.dk/aboutdana.html
Extractions: Jesper Buhl, Managing Director of Danacord, is a record enthusiast of the first order: in fact, it was his frustration with record companies' apathy that inspired him to found his own label in 1979. If there's anyone out there who feels jaded by the increasingly pressured business of classical CDs, I'd recommend a healthy dose of Jesper Buhl. Denmark's "man about CDs" inaugurated the Danacord label back in 1979 "as a protest against the current industry". He'd been studying piano at the Royal Danish Academy, needed some cash and took a job in a local record store. "I found myself looking out for records that didn't actually exist," he said, "and 1 asked the record companies why these records hadn't been made. "There would be no interest in them," they told me, "we'd be lucky to sell any!" So I thought, why not try and do it all myself? Then, I asked the companies' advice. "No way," they said, "don't even think about starting your own label ...". So I reckoned that if they had said that to me, they'd probably have said the same sort of thing to anyone else who wanted to start a record company. Hence the fact that for many years I had the market to myself." Commotio a Helios Overture under Fritz Busch, excerpts from the
