Extractions: These are the live recordings of my performances in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, held in Fort Worth, Texas (June 2000). This unusual event was a highlight of my year. It's for pianists who are over 35 and out of practice: no professionals allowed. Contestants play purely for the love of it. The pianists who come, about a hundred of them, are from dozens of countries and all walks of life: the chemist from Japan; the Brazilian ambassador; the blackjack dealer from Reno; the autoglass repairman, surgeon, lawyer, numismatist, masseur, assistant manager from Starbuck's, flight attendant... What a dazzling array of human interest. On stage, settling down at the gleaming Steinway concert grand, they glowed like 500-watt bulbs, and the audience was on the edge of their seats, hanging on every note. Music for the pure, unalloyed joy of it. Great stuff. I've always felt that part of the fun in being a true amateur comes from the mistakes, and the excitement in not knowing how well you might do. Professionalism (suggesting perfectionism) kills that spontaneity. Anyway, you might as well learn to love those pesky mistakes. Even Franz Liszt hit a few clams from time to time, but he didn't call them mistakes: he called them uninvited guests, and always tried to make them feel right at home. Or Rubinstein, who used to say: Well, sometimes I

WholeNote Discoveries janina fialkowska; Chamber Players of Canada ATMA ACD 2 2291 An accomplishedpianist, she was a symphonist who wrote several concert overtures, http://www.thewholenote.com/discoveries_jun_05/discoveries_classical.html
Extractions: Based on careful research, Fialkowska and friends found early scores for piano and string quintet. Wind parts are marked as cues for the string players to parcel out as they wish. Major brass passages, however, appear absent suggesting that perhaps Chopin may have improvised them from the keyboard when more power was needed. Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) was the first British woman to have written a true symphony and heard it performed. In her day, women were considered incapable of writing music of more substance than a nice little item to be played during afternoon tea. An accomplished pianist, she was a symphonist who wrote several concert overtures, a movement for piano and orchestra, string quartets and a fully scored operetta. She wrote a clarinet sonata, the Adagio movement of which she orchestrated as a concert piece.

Extractions: Todays broadcast was frustrating: a wonderful program, well recorded, played with great care and skill by the members of the VSO, but thwarted at every turn by musical leadership that failed to let the music break out of the confines of the bar lines. I remember standing in the nearly completed Orpheum Theatre with my mentor (and VSO Music Director) at the time, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, and sharing his excitement for its potential for both the players and supporters of one of Canadas finest ensembles. Hearing them for the first time on radio proved again the wisdom of that enterprise! Conductor Emeritus, Sergiu Comissiona, began the concert with the ever-popular Finlandia tone poem. Once the brass settled in, the opening measures held promise even as the tympani threatened to obliterate their lines. The strings shone from the start and balanced well with the woodwinds who would be the most consistent section of the whole concert.
