Extractions: The New York Times Thank you for visiting my website. I am a classical concert pianist and this website gives some idea of my life as a musician. I have performed throughout the U.S. as well as in England, France, Austria, Switzerland, Holland and Germany as a soloist, as the pianist in the Davydov-Fanning Duo with cellist Dieuwke Davydov, as a guest artist with other chamber music ensembles, and as a concerto soloist with orchestra. My most exciting new project has been the production of my CD, Musical Treasures. My current recital program features the Piano Sonata (1998) by award-winning Cleveland composer Monica Houghton. The Sonata, which was written for me, is a deeply lyrical and tremendously exciting work, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to bring it to life. I have paired it with Schubert's magnificent Sonata in A Minor, D. 845

Extractions: Another notable recent release comes from pianist Diana Fanning in a recital of solo piano music by Chopin, Debussy and Janacek, including Janacek's On an Overgrown Path. The Janacek work is particularly successful and the sensitive performance brings out the subtle intensity of these sometimes elusive works. The work is released by Franck Publications (PO Box 96, Middlebury, Vermont 05753). (also available from amazon.com and CDNow.com) Diana Fanning's CD is a treasury of gentlest playing. She brings out the floral spirit of Macdowell in the fastidious poignancy and nostalgic poetry of the Janacek collection. This is Janacek the modest singer rather than Janacek the white-haired revolutionary magus. The playing and the work will appeal to anyone who is in touch with the understated lyricism of Dvorák. The flighty hazed fantasy of Ms Fanning's playing of Debussy's L'Isle Joyeuse made me want to hear her in John Foulds' April-England and William Baines' Island of the Fey or Silverpoints. The Chopin (and all credit to Ms Fanning for avoiding a garland of smaller pieces) is done with the emphasis on gentle poetry and muted display. The liner notes show care and studiously avoid the language of the dreary technician. This music, these performances and the velvety acoustic bring out the warmer emotions. Bask contentedly.

The Middlebury College piano teacher exhibited virtuosic abilities and scrupulous attention to detail. After years of extensive touring in the United States and abroad in London, Paris, Geneva, Amsterdam and Munich, Fanning has developed her own conscientious, unwavering style, at once paying homage to and reworking the masters. Her renditions of Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert were punctuated by a tremendous performance of Monica Houghton's 1998 "Sonata," the sole modern work on the concert bill. The level that a successful concert pianist, or any professional solo artist for that matter, must maintain is astonishing. It is always striking and impressive to see someone who has the ability to memorize and internalize both the basic tonal and dynamic aspects of a piece, as well as its slightest nuances over tens of thousands of notes and figures.
