Rachel Jiménez :: Biography stephen drury of the New England Conservatory is one person who shaped my playing I am a better pianist today because of the time I spent at Yale. http://www.racheljimenez.com/bio.php
Extractions: :: Biography :: Like many other pianists, I began taking piano lessons at the ideal age of five. Today, I enjoy performing new music that is often unfamiliar to audiences and also find equal fulfillment in studying and performing the music of the traditional masters. Playing is an endeavor which I approach with respect and wonder. I am also very passionate about teaching the piano to others. I've found that it requires more than just the ability to play well; it requires a sensitivity to seeing (hearing!) the potential in a student and then using my training, skills, and instinct to bring out the best in them. I have devoted many years to this effort, and many of my lessons are taught with materials that I have developed myself. I find genuine enjoyment in teaching the valuable concepts that I have learned from others and also in finding new ways to communicate them. I'm fortunate to have been taught by some great artists. Stephen Drury of the New England Conservatory is one person who shaped my playing immensely. He helped me to polish my technique a great deal, and I credit my interest in new music entirely to his influence. After graduating from NEC with two piano performance degrees, both with distinction, I went on to get a master's degree in piano performance at Yale University. Boris Berman was my principle instructor there, and it was while in his studio that I studied some repertoire that I had wanted to play for many years. The music of Prokofiev is a particular specialty of Prof. Berman's, and studying the 6th sonata with him was an opportunity I could not pass up. I am a better pianist today because of the time I spent at Yale. Berman's proficiency at teaching the art of the piano helped me to focus and capitalize on my distinctive strengths.

A tour de force for the composer, who betrays his background as a pianist in his thorough use of the instrument, and also for the performer, pianist Stephen Drury, who plays with an intense calm that is perfectly matched to these intellectual variations on an emotional theme. The CD opens with a brilliant gambit as well: a recording of the song performed in its original setting of Argentina 1975. If what follows weren't as genuine and meaningful as the original, this idea would have destroyed the release. Instead we witness both as expressions of truth what a victory for formal experiment! And remember that May 19th this spring is the 50th anniversary of Ivess death just short of age 80 in New York City (of a stroke following a successful operation for his double hernia). Ivess Legacy Writing on Nov 3, 2003 on andante.com, Matthew Westphal reported: The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced that Stephen Hartke will receive the next Charles Ives Living Award, effective for a three-year term beginning in July 2004. The $225,000 Ives Living is paid in annual installments of $75,000; its purpose (as with the MacArthur Foundation's famous genius grant fellowships) is to free the recipient from the need to worry about earning a living so that he or she can concentrate fully on composition. To that end, the winner must agree not to accept any salaried employment for the term of the fellowship. (Commissions may be accepted.) Wrote Westphal, The Charles Ives Living was inaugurated in 1998, with Martin Bresnick as the first three-year recipient. Chen Yi received the award in 2001; her term ends next June. The fellowship is funded by royalties from Charles Ives's music, bequeathed by his widow to the American Academy to establish a fund for prizes in composition.
