Extractions: Most performer worth their salt (which unfortunately rules out a great many making their living on the concert stage) relish a composer's challenge and prefer to sink their teeth and digits into a musical stew rich enough to reward hours of study and repeated performances with new and changing flavors, insights, and experiences. One measure of a composition can be the number, variety, and interrelationships of these flavors - its complexity. The risk lies in confusing a profusion of notes with a depth of musical substance. I come to this issue as a pianist who has performed and/or recorded some of the longest and most overspilling-with-notes pieces in the modern repertoire: Elliott Carter's Night Fantasies, Frederic Rzewski's The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, Charles Ives's Concord Sonata, John Cage's Etudes Australes. At the same time, I don't consider myself a specialist in contemporary music (although 1 do notice a lot of performers out there who

Extractions: Today's Globe Opinion Magazine Education ... Living / Arts CLASSICAL MUSIC June 19, 2005 Frederic Rzewski arrives in town this week as composer-in-residence for two days at this year's weeklong Summer Institute for Contemporary Piano Performance at New England Conservatory. The entire event pays tribute to him. Some composers might consider it an honor; some might reflect on what it means for their place in the ''canon" of contemporary music. Not Rzewski. ''I don't think about it," he says. ''It doesn't mean anything to me." That is Rzewski in a nutshell. One of the most prominent living American composers and a prodigiously talented pianist, he is also an old-fashioned iconoclast. He's blunt-speaking, cantankerous focused on his art and intent on creating it with as much independence as possible from the institutions and bureaucracies that have congealed around it. Now 67, the Westfield-born Rzewski (pronounced ZHEV-skee) came of age as a composer during the heyday of the avant-garde. But his music has always been too intently eclectic to fit into any single box. In it you can hear atonality, American popular song, hints of jazz, highly structured forms and improvisation. You can also hear his musical imagination tackle subjects from the American labor movement to Beethoven's state of mind. Pianist Stephen Drury, who organizes SICPP (affectionately known as ''Sick Puppy"), says Rzewski's music stands out because it combines ''the tools of late modernism with an awareness of the audience." It gives listeners ''the musical excitement and energy and feeling that they're accustomed to," but ''using tools that they're not accustomed to."
Extractions: Movies Restaurants Food Calendar ... Music MUSIC REVIEW June 23, 2005 Reprinted from late editionsof yesterday's Globe. Frederic Rzewski is one of the major figures writing for piano in our time, and securing him as composer-in-residence was a major coup for New England Conservatory's annual Summer Institute for Contemporary Piano Performance. Founder/artistic director Stephen Drury translates the SICPP acronym as ''sick puppy," but composers like Rzewski are keeping the piano alive and wagging its tail. He's a fascinating pianist and a master of multitasking, as his solo recital in Jordan Hall Tuesday night demonstrated. He doesn't conform to the image of a concert artist, appearing onstage in a red shirt with pens clipped to its breast pocket; his way of acknowledging applause is to scratch his ear. He does not appear interested in the piano's ability to imitate instruments, or the creamiest legato of an opera singer. Instead, he revels in the piano's identity as the most complex and varied of all percussion instruments. Flights of finger-filigree lacework are not for him, but he's almost unrivaled in his range of attack, articulation, and dynamics, propelled by a sense of rhythm as strong and flexible as a healthy spine. His program featured mostly recent works not included on Nonesuch's seven-CD retrospective issued a couple of years ago. Most of his pieces are huge ''The Road," his ''novel" for piano, is heading toward eight hours. But he builds his large structures out of small fragments, like a mosaic, only none of the fragments is the same size, shape, or color. But they are cemented by a highly personal but irrefutable logic enlivened by elements of improvisation.
