Extractions: Lara Downes Opening Concert October 15 2004 As Ms. Downes told the audience, Schumann was an imaginative writer as well as a composer. His beloved Clara Wieck was the pianist for whom he wrote his most enchanting work. During her program, Ms. Downes seemed so absorbed by the Schumanns that she could have been Robert speaking with sensitivity about himself, his beloved and his music, and then Clara interpreting his work at the piano. Ms. Downes used words and music, no visuals, for this concert. The simplicity of her plan and the artistry of her performance avoided any hint of pedagogy. As she embraced her subject, words and music melted into each other. With several sections of Carnival op. 9, Ms. Downes captured the musical pictures Schumann created in his homages to Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Beethoven. Her playing ranged in spirit from graceful and enchanting to determined and contentious, and, as she had implicitly promised in her introductory remarks, she did indeed convey the particular style or phrase in the works of those earlier composers that had inspired Schumann.

For those of us who did not lose someone, what has become seemingly insurmountable are the waves of questions pounding our minds. Questions about how in the same day, the good and bad of human nature were shown in such extreme ways; about finding truth among such vastly opposing perceptions of it; doubts about humankindÕs repeated mistakes, and about the meaning of life.
