Extractions: As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfeld; Donald Lambert, arranger) Lambert, nicknamed "Muffin," "The Lamb" and "Jersey Rocket," was a great pianist who hasn't gotten the credit he deserves for some outstanding work. This arrangement of "As Time Goes By" is a case in point. He challenged and defeated Eubie Blake and Willie "The Lion" Smith in a cutting contest at the Piano Workshop of the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival. He once even asked Art Tatum to step into the ring. All of this, without being able to read a single note of music.

March 31, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria; d. May 31, 1809 in Vienna Symphony No. 92 in G Major "Oxford" Completed in 1789, age 57 The musical form that we name as a "symphony" began before Haydn, even though he is popularly known as "Papa Haydn," the "Father of the Symphony." The term Sinfonia was used as early as Handel's day, but it usually referred to a work that served as an instrumental introduction to a piece of choral music. Typically scored for strings alone, it presaged the mood and weight of the choral work to follow. The Italian composers Sammartini and Boccherini, in addition to the Austrian composers Monn, Hofmann, Dittersdorf and other minor figures, penned multiple works that they called "Symphonies," which often added wind instruments to the mix, but the form was still in evolution. It was Haydn that codified and perfected the modern symphony, consisting of four movements with contrasting tempi and musical ideas, which is still imitated now in the 21st century. Inevitably, countless variants have emerged from Haydn's model, such as Jean Sibelius' one-movement

In preparation for the chat, the students read Jim's E-Letter From Home #72 (June 1, 2002) . They asked questions about anthracite, historical buildings, origin of names and much more. Stephanie: Hello, and welcome to another Imagiverse chat! Today's guest is Jim Kevlin, a newspaper editor. Stephanie: I'll be moderating the chat today. Jim, are you there? Jim: This is Jim go ahead! MSOC Elementary: Hello from Montessori School of Corona. Jim: Hi, kids! MSOC Elementary: Where is Veterans Stadium? Jim: In Philadelphia. Veterans Stadium is only 90 minutes from here and lots of people go down to see the Phils. General admission is only $6, so it's pretty reasonable. A new stadium, however, opens in 2004 and I'm sure prices will go up then. MSOC Elementary: Have you been to Hershey, Pennsylvania? Have you been to Reading, Pennsylvania?

Extractions: It is observed that the whole history of jazz can be read through the chart of the stylistic development of the pianists. They started it all and other instrumentalists use the techniques which they developed. Even if the pianist is not the star, he is a kind of an aristocrat. He is practically alone and can manage by himself if necessary. Over the years, respect for the role of the jazz pianist has increased. This page will eventually be more descriptive and include many more pianists. I am gradually writing more on people and gathering links. If you would like me to hurry up on one person in particular that you see below, let me know. Tell me who I need to add to this list!!! Send me links, anecdotes, samples of their work, anything.. And yes, you can nominate yourself to be on here. This list is for any jazz pianist. Thanks to all of you who have already submitted information and links!!! Andreas Baer

Dick Hyman In Recital dick Hyman in Recital. Reference Recordings RR84CD Playing Time 6316 The album ends with an unrestrained version of james P. Johnson s Carolina Shout http://www.audiophilia.com/software/mm5.htm
Extractions: In the world of jazz piano, there is a thin line between brilliance and gaudiness. As we look through the course of jazz history, we find few pianists who can express their genius without exceeding the bounds of good taste - JellyRoll Morton, James P. Johnson and Art Tatum, among others. To this exalted list, we can add Dick Hyman. Known primarily for his work with filmmaker Woody Allen, Dick Hyman has had a hand in just about every avenue of American music. Hyman has collaborated with the likes of Charlie Parker and Benny Goodman, performed on Broadway and scored for TV and film. Dick Hyman In Recital gives us an opportunity to hear a brilliant pianist at his best, playing a magnificent instrument and set in an acoustically exquisite setting. Hyman's recital opens with the standard, The Way You Look Tonight , immediately highlighting his pianistic influences - Tatum, Gershwin, Monk and even Bach's stamp are readily apparent. Hyman blazes chorus after chorus with a myriad of ideas that are glued together by a reoccurring mid-range trill. The recapitulation features some contrapuntal experiments that lead to a perfect ending, brief and to the point. It all makes for a delightful opener.

Says noted writer Bill Zinsser, "Computerized in Hyman's brain, instantly transferable to his fingers, is every popular piano and organ style that has ever been played in America, historically correct to the year when it was in vogue. He can also replicate note for note, the style of all the American giants of jazz piano in this century, from the intricate rags of Eubie and the galloping stride of James P. Johnson to the urgent bebop of Bud Powell and the introspective lyricism of Bill Evans." The culmination of Hyman's fifty years of study and performance is the interactive CD-ROM
