Dick Hyman In years past, dick Hyman was music director for Arthur Godfrey, He has servedas composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for the Woody Allen films Zelig, http://www.riverwalk.org/profiles/hyman.htm
Extractions: Throughout a busy musical career which got underway in the early 50's, Dick Hyman has functioned as a pianist, organist, arranger, conductor, and composer. His versatility in all these areas has resulted in well over one hundred albums recorded under his own name and many more in support of other artists. While developing a masterful facility for improvisation in his own piano style, Mr. Hyman has investigated the earliest periods of jazz and ragtime and has researched and recorded the music of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Zez Confrey, Eubie Blake, Fats Waller, and other early figures. He includes this historical material in his frequent solo recitals. Other solo recordings include the music of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. A new recording with orchestra is known as From The Age Of Swing. Mr. Hyman's concert compositions include his Piano Concerto, Ragtime Fantasy, and Sonata For Violin And Piano. In his numerous public appearances he has performed solo, with orchestra, with his own quintet, with cornetist Ruby Braff, and in duo-piano appearances with Derek Smith, Roger Kellaway, Ralph Sutton, and the late Dick Wellstood. For the past ten summers he has acted as artistic director of the acclaimed Jazz In July series of concerts at New York's 92nd St. Y and frequently appears in the United States and abroad in solo recitals. In 1995 Mr. Hyman was inducted into the Jazz Hall Of Fame of

Extractions: Who Is Dick Hyman? by Bill Zinsser For almost fifty years it has been common knowledge in the entertainment business that the person to call for whatever kind of music you need is the pianist-arranger-composer-organist Dick Hyman. Computerized in Hyman's brain, instantly transferable to his fingers, is every popular piano and organ style that has ever been played in America, historically correct to the year when it was in vogue. He can also replicate note for note, the style of all the American giants of jazz piano in this century, from the intricate rags of Eubie and the galloping stride of James P. Johnson to the urgent bebop of Bud Powell and the introspective lyricism of Bill Evans. One result of this technical and scholarly breadth is that Hyman gets hired by such metabolic opposites as George Bush and Woody Allen. Bush could approve a Hyman engagement at the White House secure in the knowledge that if he felt a sudden yen for the society-band piano tinklings that he and Barbara danced to during his senior year at Yale, Hyman could oblige at a snap of the presidential fingers. Allen hired him no less confidently to provide the music that gave RADIO DAYS, BROADWAY DANNY ROSE, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and ZELIG so much of their period authenticity and charm. For some years Hyman has been giving entertaining "History of Jazz Piano" concerts around the world. One of them was even broadcast by the BBC in the UK. When Joel Simpson suggested putting Hyman's great skill to work making a CD-ROM survey of the art form, Hyman saw it as a way of preserving and amplifying his jazz lecture. But insead of two hours of music, the CD-ROM contains more than five, with an extensive complement of graphics illustrating the places the music was made as well as elaborate documentation on the lives, styles, and discographies of the artists. Hyman had constant input into the project, contributing tune comments on every selection, controlling quality and offering presentation suggestions.

It was the era of the budget-priced chart-buster album: the months hit singles would be re-recorded by session musicians to match the originals as closely as possible ( "can you tell the difference between these and the originals" Top Of The Pops is the series which you're most likely to remember (each volume bedecked with a scantily-clad female similar to the one featured here), but many other companies ran similar series throughout the '60s and '70s, selling surprisingly large numbers of copies in Woolworths, high street supermarkets and other outlets. Using cover versions meant the albums could be made cheaply, and for the buyer, a good collection of hit songs could be had for much less than the price of buying the actual singles. In fact, people tend to underestimate exactly how many copies the top titles (mainly Hallmark/Pickwick's Top Of The Pops and MFP's Hot Hits series) did sell. At least one

Jackson's parents convinced him to study the violin, but after awhile, he took up the alto sax and proved more accomplished with that instrument playing Jazz. In 1944, he became part of Lucky Millinder's band working as both a vocalist and saxist. While he was still in high school, Jackson and his friend Freddie Webster, formed a band - The Harlem Hotshots, who, in 1943, enjoyed a brief stint in a Buffalo (NY) club before returning to Cleveland. At that time, Jackson caught the eye of bandleader Lucky Millinder, whose sidemen gave him the unforgettable name "Bull Moose", and the colorful monicker stuck. One night while on tour in Texas, Wynonie Harris, the scheduled singer, didn't show up. Jackson was pulled out of the sax section to croon the song "Hurry, Hurry," and a new career was born. In 1949, he had hits with "Little Girl, Don't Cry" and "Why Don't You Haul Off and Love Me" (a "cover" of Wayne Raney's hillbilly hit, a cross-fertilizing practice at King).

Tommy formed his first orchestra in 1938. His orchestras though loud and very enthusiastic never garnered great public acclaim. Some of the band members in 1938 and part of '39 were, Tino Isgro, tenor saxophone, Whitey Thomas, trumpet, Tony Picciotto, trumpet, Benny West, and Bobby Boon. Tino Isgro went on to play with Johnny Long (and can be seen in the film 'Hit The Ice'), also with Glen Gray, Teddy Powell, Dick Rogers, and in 1945, with Jimmy Dorsey. (Many more after Dorsey.) At the start of 1939, Whitey Thomas went with Isham Jones. He later joined the Glenn Miller Air Force Band. Whitey now (1998) lives in Mossy Rock, Washington.

Ragtime | Stride | Swing | Novelty Like ragtime, there are three giants of stride piano james Price Johnson, Today, stride piano is in the capable hands of such people as dick Hyman, http://members.aol.com/midimusic/strdtxt.html
Extractions: The term stride comes from the action of the left hand, which supplies a constant beat against a melodious right hand. The left hand jumps from strong upbeats (either single-note, octaves or tenths) to chordal downbeats (usually triads or tetrads, but sometimes single notes). Variety is given to the left-hand accompaniment through a walking-bass pattern, melodic episodes, arpeggiation and other techniques). Like ragtime, there are three giants of stride piano: James P[rice] Johnson Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller and Willie "The Lion" Smith . Samples of their work are included in this site. Of this trio, Johnson (1891 - 1955) is recognized as the seminal influence; some students of the subject credit him with creating stride piano (originally called "shout" piano). He was Fats Waller's mentor. Fats (1904 - 1943), of course, went on to compose dozens of tunes, many of which have become standards. However, he never lost his enthusiasm for stride. He was also the most "commercial" of the Big Three. William Henry Joseph Bonaparte Berthloff (Willie "The Lion") Smith (1897 - 1973) was a classically-trained musician who claimed to have developed his left hand by playing Bach.
