The Sheila Variations: Marlon - 1924 - 2004 This discovery led me to marlon Brando. His name was everywhere. He seemedsynonymous with It would be like a bad pianist playing a brilliant concerto. http://www.sheilaomalley.com/archives/002062.html
Extractions: "This race and this country and this life produced me, he said. I shall express myself as I am." James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Main I've always wanted to be an actor. Since I was a little kid. Many members of my family are in this profession - and have been - so it always seemed like a valid way to make a living, as opposed to some wacked-out Bohemian dream. In a certain respect, the people who have the "normal" jobs in my family are the black sheep. When I was little, I was the same way that I am now- the same person who throws herself into her passions with such abandon that all else fades away. My passions become PROJECTS. "Oh. Humphrey Bogart it is now? Fine, then. Let's go." I check things off the list, I must see this, this, and this. I must learn about him. I must envelop myself in him. When I was 11 years old, maybe 12, I was babysitting. And I saw Dog Day Afternoon - clearly a movie which I should NOT have seen at that age. But that's irrelevant. Because sometimes it is the things that happen to us TOO SOON that have the greatest impact. For when are we ever truly ready for it? That movie, and Al Pacino's performance in general, changed my life. He seemed different than anybody else I had ever seen before. He seemed to not be playing a character. He seemed to be on the EDGE of reality, as opposed to just mirroring reality. His performance moved me, a little girl, to such a degree that I remember wondering, idly, as the father of the child I babysat for drove my home later that evening, "I wonder if Sonny is still alive in prison somewhere ... I'd like to write to him." "Sonny" - the gay bankrobber Al Pacino portrayed - had made such an impression, and had filled my heart with such compassion - that I wanted to write to the real guy, and tell him how I felt about him. The whole sex-change operation plot of the film had gone right over my head - but that was all right. What I really got was a new and vibrant view of not only acting, but of human potential. Al Pacino seemed to me a miracle.

Extractions: For This 17th ADAMS AVE. STREET FAIR I've been booking and programming Festivals in San Diego since my first back in 1967 (with Folk Festivals, Blues Festivals and more General Music Events, this one is #50), and these Street Fairs and Roots Festivals we do in the Fall and Spring are right up there with the best I've done. They are FREE TO THE PUBLIC so many people who wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity to attend a music event of this scope, have that opportunity twice a year on Adams Avenue. This year at the Street Fair, there is as usual a wide variety of music and (as I often do) I encourage you to go see some kind of music you haven't spent any time with before; you might find that you like it quite a lot. I don't have room here to comment on everyone but there are some very special people coming this year that you might find the time to spend a few moments with and here are some of the reasons. Extractions: Robin Clifford Twenty-eight year old Thomas Seyer (Romain Duris, "L'Auberge espagnole," "Le Divorce") has been following in the footsteps of his beloved father Robert (Niels Arestrup, "Meeting Venus") by illegally hustling real estate with brutish methods when a chance run-in with his deceased mom's concert manager puts him at a crossroads. While the violence of his dad's world clearly turns him on, macho brutality is pitted against the artistic and refined when Tom discovers reconnecting with the world of his concert pianist mother truly jazzes him in "The Beat That My Heart Skipped." Laura: Cowriter (with "Read My Lips" collaborator Tonino Benacquista)/director Jacques Audiard has made an unconventional move in remaking an American film. James Toback's debut film, 1978's "Fingers," is a cult item whose protagonist, Harvey Keitel, suffers a more violent end than Audiard's hero. Audiard has taken Toback's premise and created an offbeat character study of a man whose parents, one living and one deceased, are engaged in a virtual tug-of-war over his future. Duris gives a star-making turn as the intense, hip, jangly edged thug with the soul of an artist.

Approximately 2,278 freshmen and 740 transfers arrived on campus August 28, to begin their first semester as Binghamton University students. They were joined by upperclassmen who arrived August 29. The first day of classes was September 2. BU continues to be highly selective, accepting only 44 percent of its applying freshmen, up from 42 percent last year. National figures indicate that 90 percent of U.S. colleges admit more than 90 percent of their new student applicants. BU is one of the few schools in the country admitting less than 50 percent of its applicants for freshman admission. Binghamton University currently carries the highest rating among the SUNY university centers in the "most selective" designation. More than 70 percent of the freshman class meets the designation, which is based on SAT scores and high school averages as defined by the SUNY system.

Extractions: By Jeff Cebulski Frankly, jazz has been kind of quiet, but not because there was a dearth of good music. Surely, the regular routines commence: concerts, festivals, a thousandish recordings but very few of these recordings received public notice. Some attempts at coalescing urban and traditional sounds to gain the attention of Hip-hop Nation were interesting, but most failed miserably. Lacking sufficient radio exposure, some excellent talent is being ignored. So, I now attempt to steer potential fans to places that will introduce and ratify what is best about this age-old, struggling genre. Fly . Fly. Savoy Jazz. John Abercrombie: Assorted Recordings . ECM: rarum XIV. This collection of Abercrombie hits is one of the finest of its genre. Here (no doubt aided by the wisdom of John himself) is a truly representative list of the guitarists 30-year work for ECM, beginning with the classic tone poem Timeless, and featuring moments with his initial progressive improvisational trio Gateway (with hall of fame mates Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnnette); a contribution to an album by trumpet star Kenny Wheeler; his duo classic with Ralph Towner, Sargasso Sea, that typified the kind of modern chamber music ECM was known for; his second basic trio with Marc Johnson and Peter Erskine; and ultimately his work with organist Dan Wall and the painfully little-appreciated Adam Nussbaum. Theres nothing weak or puzzling about this arrangement. A real treat.
