Among the first truly Canadian composers was Claude Champagne. I first discovered his music during a visit to Montréal, Québec in 1988. It offered an interesting glimpse into some of the rich Québécois heritage. Born 21 May 1891 in Montréal, Québec, Claude Champagne descended from a Parisian family on his father's side; his grandfather was a well-known fiddler in the Repentigny region near Montréal; his mother was Irish. These lineages helped shape his development. He studied piano, violin and theory, and received diplomas from Dominion College of Music in 1906 and the Conservatoire National de Musique de Montréal in 1909. He then taught piano, violin, theory and harmony at Varennes and Longueuil colleges and played in the Canadian Grenadier Guards Band. Champagne returned to Montréal in 1928 with wife Jeanne Marchal of Liège, Belgium, whom he had married in Paris in 1922. Among other posts, he was professor at l'École de Musique Vincent d'Indy from 1930 to 1962. He visited Brazil in 1942 and 1946 and Switzerland in 1948.
