Extractions: Schubert Piano Sonata in C minor D.958 "The public hit the bull's-eye with Finghin Collins right at the start of the season.. The young Irish pianist produced a lightness of touch and a singing tone that are quite rare... Magical playing.. a real discovery... " Finghin Collins has been a regular visitor to Bantry over the years but this will be his first full recital in Bantry House. Since winning the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland in 1999, his career has taken off in a big way leading to concerts with major orchestras like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and recitals in major venues across Europe. Recent years have seen considerable interest in Schumann's orchestral and chamber works, all written after his marriage to Clara. But we all know that the Schumann that really matters is the young composer, always hopelessly in love, who wrote one piano masterpiece after another. Kinderszenen and Humoreske were both written for Clara in the years when her tyrannical father was doing everything he could to keep them apart, including sending Clara, who was a brilliant pianist, on a long European concert tour. Schumann wrote to her endlessly:

Extractions: Beethoven Violin Sonata No.5 in F major Op.24 'Spring' Prokofiev Violin Sonata No.2 in D major Op.94a Violin Sonata Franck Sonata in A major for violin and piano Some musicians endeavour to impose their personality on the music they play, others seem to act as a conduit through which a composer's thoughts can flow, unimpeded. Catherine Leonard and Finghin Collins played with a clarity and freshness, which places them in that second group; there was forcefulness, there was tenderness, there was joy: but it issued from the music, it was never added to it. Everything was under control, but imperceptibly so; the adherence to classical forms was not seen as a limitation but as a facilitator. Irish Times Catherine Leonard and Finghin Collins need little introduction to West Cork audiences, though, strangely, this is the first time they have played together for us as a duo. They have chosen four major works from the repertoire, guaranteed to delight every music-lover. The Spring Sonata is amongst Beethoven's most delicious works, the seemingly unstoppable ribbon of melody slowly unravels for our delight and ravishment. This is probably the best loved of Beethoven's sonatas on account of its irresistible lyrical invention, but it is the slow movement in particular that resonates most deeply with audiences and players alike. The quiet beauty of the theme is instantly and eloquently seductive. There is no passion, rather a gentle radiance and a hushed joyfulness, whose climactic moment is the pianissimo coda.
