Extractions: The Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra is a group comprising eighty of the Academy's finest musicians from North and South of the Border. Under the baton of James Cavanagh, this group makes several annual appearances at the National Concert Hall. The group meets weekly at the Academy to rehearse a wide variety of repertoire, which they perform regularly in concert in Dublin and around the country. They have made several radio and television appearances on such programmes as the Gay Byrne Show and BBC's Songs of Praise. In 1998 members of the Orchestra appeared in Symphony Hall Birmingham as part of a collaboration with Birmingham Conservatoire. Most recently the Orchestra performed to critical acclaim under the baton of Gerhard Markson, Principal Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in All Hallows College, Dublin. In November 2002 members of the Orchestra travelled to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow to work with the distinguished conductor Richard Armstrong CBE in a concert tour of Glasgow, Dublin Belfast and Kendal.

Extractions: Regarded as one of Ireland's most exciting young chamber ensembles, the Royal Irish Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1997 by Elizabeth Csibi. Bringing together some of the Academy's finest young string players, the Orchestra usually performs standing up, without a conductor and soloists are generally drawn from within the orchestra. Their wide-ranging repertoire of music has been heard in some of Ireland's finest performance including the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, the National Gallery of Ireland and the National Concert Hall. In April 2000 the Orchestra performed a series of highly acclaimed concerts in Paris with Finghin Collins, winner of the 1999 Clara Haskil International Piano Competition. There has been a steady stream, maybe even a flood, of thrilling youngsters from our music schools and academies, and the efforts of various organisations to nurture and develop it deserve the highest praise. Sponsorship also plays a vital role and companies such as Axa and Toyota can be proud of what their backing has achieved through their association with the Dublin International Piano Competition and the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, respectively. Of equal importance, however, is the willingness of established orchestras and artists to take youngsters under their wing to help ease them into the big time' of public performance. This will be perfectly illustrated when Barry Douglas and his chamber orchestra, Camerata Ireland, celebrate Mozart's birthday at the National Concert Hall on January 27 with a performance of his Concerto for Two Pianos. As good as he is, Douglas will not be playing both instruments himself but will be accompanied by young Belfast pianist Michael McHale, who was chosen as the Camerata Ireland/Accenture Young Musician of 2004. McHale is a former student of John O'Conor's at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and is now furthering his studies in London.

This is the first visit of the Peking Opera House of Beijing to Ireland. The company is considered a national treasure - just like the Abbey Theatre is here, I imagine, though with less in-house drama. Eliminate, particularly, all thoughts of Madama Butterfly and The Mikado. Unlike opera in the West, music for the Peking Opera House is not created specially by a composer. Singing follows sets of commonly used tunes, words are written to fit the tunes and the music is played on a variety of string and percussion instruments. During this a synthesis of stylised action takes place, with singing, mime, acrobatic fighting and dancing being used to convey all sorts of dynastic fairy tales.

The young musicians of the Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute gave a vibrant chamber music concert that was uncannily similar to something you would hear at the famed Marlboro Music Festival in southern Vermont. As in any Marlboro concert, the institute's skilled young musicians worked nicely with established performers to give readings of uncommon polish and energy. The married Steans faculty duo of violinist Miriam Fried and violist Paul Biss inspired cellist Antoine Lederlin and pianist Finghin Collins to their best in the Washington premiere of Lewis Spratlan's "Streaming: Quartet for Piano and Strings." After episodes of ambiguous droning, songful lyricism and declamatory agitation, the musicians skillfully merged this disparate material. Violinist Annie Rabbat and violist Eric Nowlin pitched in for Ned Rorem's flippantly titled and largely derivative piano quartet, "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," which sounds like early Debussy with a sprinkling of dissonance. The musicians found the music in this occasionally alluring work, taking the chance to display a keen sense of proportion, balance and accent.

The ensemble was founded in August 2004 by cellist Clarice Jensen, manager Christina Jensen, and conductor Donato Cabrera and is incorporated as a non-profit organization. ACME is dedicated to the outstanding performance of contemporary masterworks for chamber ensemble, principally written by American composers. By performing and commissioning works by up-and-coming as well as established American composers, the ensemble aims to preserve and promote contemporary American music as part of mainstream society. ACME is comprised of virtuosic musicians who excel at the performance of chamber music as well as solo repertoire and are enthusiastic advocates for new music. ACME Artistic Director and cellist Clarice Jensen completed her master’s degree at The Juilliard School where she studied with Joel Krosnick. Ms. Jensen has performed with the New Juilliard Ensemble, Continuum, Columbia Composers, the Argento Ensemble, and the Avian Orchestra. She performed the U.S. premiere of Guo Wenjing’s Concertino for Cello and Ensemble as part of the 2002 Lincoln Center Festival, the world premiere of Dimitri Yanov-Yanovsky’s Hearing Solution for cello and ensemble as part of the Silk Road "Artist in Residence" program, the U.S. premiere of Roger Reynold’s Process and Passion for cello, violin and computer and the world premiere of Donald Martino’s Rhapsody for cello, vibraphone and piano. Ms. Jensen has performed in master classes with composers Elliott Carter and Ned Rorem.
