Aged just 25, he has already performed with such prestigious orchestras as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to great public and critical acclaim. Having won all the important awards for piano in Ireland, Finghin Collins has gone on to achieve major international success. In September 1999 he won first prize at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Vevey, Switzerland. Previous successes included semi-final prizes at both the Leeds and Dublin International Piano Competitions in 1996 and 1997. Early steps with his sister Mary were followed by extensive study with internationally acclaimed Irish pianist John O'Conor at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, from where he graduated in 1999 with a first class honours degree awarded by Dublin City University. In June 2002 he completed three years of post-graduate study with French pianist Dominique Merlet at the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva, graduating with a premier prix avec distinction (first prize with distinction).

They were formed in 2003 and have quickly established a reputation in the area for performances of very high quality. Their programmes are very varied with traditional jazz classics and their own versions of other melodies. Anthony Boutall (saxophone/clarinet/vocals), Simon Lodge (trombone/trumpet/vocals), Gavin Whitworth (piano), Vicky Smith (drums) and Sophie Webber (bass) make up Jazz Platoon. In addition to performing locally, the group has toured both Europe and Canada. The senior band, Breakaway, appears each Christmas with the Bedford Hospitals Nurses Choir. This venture has so far raised over £36,000 for local charities since its inception in 1990. David Twitchings, the Musical Director of Bedford Brass was appointed in January 2004 upon the retirement of Terry Hext. David began his music making as a cornet player with the Boys Brigade in London, before joining the RAF as a Musician in 1967. On leaving the RAF, David was appointed Bandmaster / Cornetist with Rushden Temperance Band. He maintains a keen interest in big band / swing band music since his RAF days.

The summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1936, Ravinia hosts concerts in three venues, an open air pavilion, Martin Theatre and Bennett-Gordon Hall. Most concerts can also be heard from Ravinias lawn, where thousands of music lovers picnic while enjoying Chicagos mild summer evenings. In addition to concerts by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ravinia also presents a wide variety of chamber, popular and world music concerts. Ravinia also seeks to nurture aspiring musicians through outreach initiatives and its Steans Institute for Young Artists. Extractions: Major Funders October 2002 Friday 25 October, Waterfront Hall, 19.45 Concert Details Monday 28 October, Irish News The 40th Belfast Festival at Queen's threw itself at the city on Friday night in a blaze of colour and a barrage of sound. Unfortunately the launch also involved in almost nautical proportions a great deal of torrential rainwater. However, the opening concert at the Waterfront Hall was preceded by an impressive torchlit procession from the City Hall, culminating in an amazing aerial performance from French musicians Transe Express. The foyer of the hall pulsated with primeval drumming and I can't remember a festival launch that managed to attract more children and young people. The concert itself, given by the Ulster Orchestra with principal conductor Thierry Fischer featured music from three capital cities reinforcing the theme, Sounding the City. Fischer and the orchestra enjoyed themselves immensely in Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from W est Side Story.

Conor McPherson won the Olivier Award for Best Play for The Weir. He was born in Dublin in 1971 and his plays include This Lime Tree Bower and St Nicholas. The Group Theatre Tralee is one of the oldest drama groups in Ireland. Since its foundation in 1969, it has presented over eighty plays. This production represents their first foray into lunchtime theatre. The play will be directed by Mike O'Halloran, assisted by David Hobbert. Lighting design is by Jimmy McDonnell and Set Design is by Mike O'Halloran.

They then studied with members of the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne, at the Rotterdam music school with Ben-Zion Shamir, and followed masterclasses with Ivry Gitlis, Levon Chilingirian, Henry Meyer, Arnold Steinhardt and Miriam Fried. At the same time the Aviv Quartet has embarked on a professional career. They have performed in the Jerusalem chamber music Encounters under the direction of Isaac Stern with members of the Emerson and Juilliard Quartets and were resident quartet at the Kfar Blum Festival in July1998. In June 2001, Aviv Quartet took part in a series of concerts celebrating the anniversary of the Alban Berg Quartet in Tel Aviv and was given a very warm reception by both audiences and the press.

Extractions: L ast Thursday, 4th November, in the Large Room, City Hall, Waterford Music celebrated with its 500th Concert and took the forward-looking, positive step of engaging the up-and-coming pianist Finghin Collins and a new piece of Irish music from composer Gerry Murphy. Murphy is the son-in-law of the late Patsy Cahill who taught me Latin in Mount Sion, and a wonderful inspirational teacher he was too. Murphy composed Five Locks On The Barrow which had its premiere in Duiske Abbey, Graiguenamanagh, this year. Finghan Collins brought out the modern imagery of the piece that reflects a musical fascination with water in its many moods. It was a treat to hear it. The rest of Collin's programme was a melancholic choice of Schumann and Schubert. Both of these composers died from syphilis, or perhaps poisoning from the mercury used in the treatment of the disease. Perhaps the work should have been more celebratory in keeping with the occasion as Waterford Music was making a significant piece of history having survived 63 seasons of music. Finghin Collins is a confident performer and he showed his control in Schuman's Kinderzenen and the little-heard Humoreske. His head was in the clouds of romantic lyricism and then he swooped down as if his head would meet the keys as the work showed his skill. His closing Schubert, Sonata in C min. was a powerful and emotional piece with just a few infelicities on the night. I heard the powerful final Allegro some years ago at an AIDS Concert and I saw men crying on that occasion. Collins encored with a Chopin Nocturne dedicated to the memory of Bridget Doolin and it was a touching tribute. A Wallace Romance ended the memorable evening. In an evening of celebration it seemed odd that the Chair of Waterford Music made a slight criticism of Waterford media coverage. Perhaps the problem might be with a hard working Committee that do not have a Press or Publicity Officer.
