As a performer, Chopin revolutionized the technique of pianoforte-playing, turning the hands outward and favouring a light, responsive touch. His compositions, which include two piano concertos and other orchestral works, have great changes of mood, and flowing rhythms. From 1831 he lived in Paris, France, where he became known in the fashionable salons, although he rarely performed in public. In 1836 the composer Franz Liszt introduced him to George Sand Les Sylphides
Extractions: Of artists who have recorded all or a fair number of the Mazurkas, it is Ignaz Friedman who evokes most vividly the music's popular roots. His selection is a fascinating document, but it must be said that he can also be wilful in his tempi and rubato and thickens up the text at times. This sort of thing was anathema to Rubinstein, of course, and his proudly impetuous first recorded cycle of 1938-9 (which I reviewed not many months ago on Naxos 8.110656-57) set the tone for Chopin playing for many decades to follow. It is full of wondrous things, even if it is sometimes possible to suspect which are the pieces he learnt specially for the occasion ("when in doubt take it by storm" seems the idea) and which were already in his repertoire. But above all, you always feel that Rubinstein is in a room playing to an audience. No, I don't quite detect the music's popular roots here.

Frédéric Chopin, the greatest of the Polish composers, was born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw on February 22, 1810 of a French father, and a Polish mother. He spent the first 20 years of his life in Warsaw, where he was able to hear many of the premier artists of the time perform. Chopin first studied piano at the Warsaw Conservatory, and became very proficient on the instrument by the time he reached his early teens. He played his first concert at the age of 7, and was a published composer by the time he turned 15. By the late 1820s, Chopin had won a great reputation as a piano virtuoso and composer. He toured throughout Europe to the acclaim of audiences and critics, alike. In 1831, after performing in Paris, he fell so deeply in love with the city that he made it his home, and never again returned to Warsaw. He soon became a favorite of the Parisian salons, and the society elite, and throughout the years that he lived in Paris, was always in great demand as both a pianist and a teacher. In the late 1830s, Chopin met the novelist, Mme. Aurore Dudévant, who used the pen name

Frederic Chopin (born 1810 in Poland, died 1849 in Paris) Karen: When is your birthday and who started you on piano lessons, and who are your teachers and how come you like music, especially the piano so much. Chopin : Whew! What a lot of questions to answer so early in the morning, you will have to forgive me if I take a while to get going. I had to play a concert last night for the Warsaw Charitable Society. It was a benefit concert, played at the concert hall of the Society on Krakowskie Przedmiescie, not too far from the Radziwill Palace. I personally like playing in the salons of the elegant rich people of Warsaw more than I like playing in large concert halls. I know that my friend, Franz Liszt has been doing the concert hall circuit since he's been nine years old. But my parents never pushed for me to be doing concert tours all through Europe. They wanted me to play in salons in Poland, and have a bit of a normal life. But I am getting ahead of myself aren't I. So sorry! O.K. I will address your questions in the correct order, I was born, according to my parents, on February 22, 1810. My older sister Louise, born in 1807, first taught me music, then when I exhausted her teaching, Mom took over. Mom's name is Justine Krzyzanowska, and she has a wonderful singing voice as well as being quite an accomplished pianist herself. My Dad (Nicolas Chopin) is also quite a good musician, knowing how to play the violin as well as being a scholar and patriot of Poland.

He left Poland late in 1830, at the time of the unsuccessful national rising against Russian domination, and settled in Paris where he soon gained a reputation as "the most sensitive genius in existence". For some 10 years Chopin enjoyed a liaison with the woman novelist George Sand. By the time his relationhip with her ended in 1847 he was seriously ill with tuberculosis. His compositions, mainly for the piano, make a remarkable use of the newly developed instrument. His reliance on the sustaining pedal was as much a part of his compositional technique as it was a part of his piano playing. Frédéric Chopin Works

The famous funeral march music, so somber and lugubrious, so often borrowed in Road Runner and Bugs Bunny cartoons, is by him; it was originally part of a piano sonata. And then recall that Barry Manilow hit "Could It Be Magic"; take away Barry's voice, and the piano part that remains is unmistakably Chopin's Prelude opus 28, no. 20 in C minor. Extractions: Frédéric Chopin F rédéric Chopin was one of the most eminent composers of piano music, and his music is among the most original and influential works of the nineteenth century. With Chopin we leave the world of the eighteenth century piano completely and enter a new realm of idiomatic writing that grows directly out of the technique of the instrument and its development that brought it close to our modern instrument in sonority. I ronically, Chopin didn't care much for the music of his illustrious contemporaries even though many were friends or acquaintances. Schumann, who had been extravagant in his praise of Chopin in introducing him to Germany, was too idiosyncratic. Berlioz and Mendelssohn didn't interest him and Liszt was often vulgar. Chopin's heroes were Bach and Mozart. This sense of classical proportion and elegance combined with a love of bel canto operatic singing and his Polish heritage form Chopin's basic aesthetic. The Polish expatriate who spent most of his creative life in Paris and he may be considered as the first nationalist composer. He is also the man whose genius enlarged the technical range and the musical expression of the instrument through a remarkable body of work.
