Extractions: Frederic Chopin biography Lesser known facts about Frederic Chopin's nationalistic conflict and how this affected his music. Frederic Francois Chopin, Polish-born composer and renowned pianist, was the creator of 55 mazurkas, 16 polonaises, 26 preludes, 27 etudes, 21 nocturnes, 4 ballads, and 4 scherzos. But did you know that Chopin's teacher was disappointed in him because he never wrote a Polish opera? And what of his national allegiance? Did you know that Chopin's family was of French lineage? Did you know that he was buried in Paris but asked that Polish soil be sprinkled over his grave? These are but a few of the lesser-known facts about the well-known musician. Chopin was born Frederic (spelled in Polish as Fryderyk) Francois (French) Chopin, his very name indicative of the blended impact two countries made on the precocious musician's life. His father, Nicholas Chopin, was a French tutor to many aristocratic Polish families, later accepting a position as a French teacher at the Warsaw Lyceum. Although Chopin later attended the Lyceum where his father taught, his early training began at home. This included receiving piano lessons from his mother. By the age of six, Chopin was creating original pieces, showing innate prodigious musical ability. His parents arranged for the young Chopin to take piano instruction from Wojciech Zywny.

Extractions: Album Notes Chopin's Etudes Opus 10 mark the heginning of the modern school of piano playing. His contemporaries exponents of the style brillant vogue of the early 1800s such as Hummel, Moscheles, Weher, and Czerny wrote complex and varied sequences of scales and arpeggios, which were nonetheless based on the Classical piano technique of Mozart and Beethoven, itself already based on the harpsichord techniques of the Baroque period, although they pushed it to the limits of playability. The hands stayed in the classic five-note position, the thumb rarely ventured onto the black keys, and leaps over a tenth were hard to find. At the same time, the piano had evolved enormously, from Mozart's delicate wooden structure into one capable of holding its own in a major concert hall, with increased carrying power and an extended tonal palette. The piano was ready and waiting for the one who would crown it the "king of instruments."

Essentials Of Music - Composers Frédéric François chopin FRÉDÉRIC FRANÇOIS chopin Born March 1?, 1810. The music of Frédéric chopin is, in many ways, a record of chopin the pianist. http://www.essentialsofmusic.com/composer/chopin.html
Extractions: "One needs only to study a certain positioning of the hand in relation to the keys to obtain with ease the most beautiful sounds, to know how to play long notes and short notes and to [attain] certain unlimited dexterity... A well formed technique, it seems to me, [is one] that can control and vary a beautiful sound quality." Polish composer of music for the piano. Chopin's music helped to expand the technical and expressive range of the piano. The wonder of Chopin's music is the way he conjured new sounds from the piano. His pieces explore the full expressive range of the instrument, and he had the ability to create (sometimes in just a few lines of music) a kind of musical poetry. The freedom with which he played is reflected in his extensive use of tempo rubato. He also extended the harmonic language of the Romantic style; not by bold leaps to new chords and tonalities, but by subtle side trips that take his pieces to those new tonal areas. Finally, Chopin is remembered as one of the first nationalist composers, using the themes and dances of his native Poland as the sources for his pieces (especially the polonaises and mazurkas). In every way, Chopin was the quintessential "Romantic" composer, and Robert Schumann 's initial reaction to his music ("Hats off, gentlemen, a genius") was borne out in his short but spectacular career.
