Extractions: ASV CDDCA1092 Francesco Caramiello's advocacy of the piano music of Martucci is evident from his enthusiastic and scholarly notes to this release. This is his second volume of solo works (Volume One was on CDDCA897), in addition to which he has put down the First Piano Concerto on CDDCA690 and the Second on CDDCA691. Martucci made a conscious and determined effort to absorb Austro-Germanic influences in his music: he was a pupil of Beniamino Cesi (a pupil of Thalberg) and audible influences are, in particular, Liszt, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Caramiello has all the requisite technical resource for this repertoire. He brings out the Lisztian sonorities and figurations in the Capriccio and Serenata , Op. 57, and seems to relish the deeply-rooted sonorities of the extended (12 minutes)
Extractions: Crotchet Sir Edward Elgar was in Rome early in 1907, and again as that year turned into 1908. Whilst he was there he was befriended by one of the leading figures of secular music in Italy - Giovanni Sgambati. Sgambati gave a reception for the Elgars on their earlier visit and, during their later stay, proposed that Elgar conduct an all-Elgar concert in a series that had already included personal appearances by Debussy, Sibelius and Strauss. But the hall was cavernous and full of echo, so Elgar declined. Nevertheless, Sgambati and Elgar remained on friendly terms until the Italian composer died in 1914. Sgambati symbolised a struggle to free Italian music from a complete dominance of opera in favour of instrumental, chamber and orchestral music. He was an early link in the chain of late 19 th /early 20 th century Italian music that included the, perhaps, more familiar name, Martucci (who frankly wrote stronger works), down to Martucci's student Ottorino Respighi.

Extractions: Late Concertos (Revision 2, 8/5/92) This list includes music written during the period from the late eighteenth century through the present day. The majority of the music from this time span is generally considered to be Classical (roughly 1750-1820), Romantic (roughly 1820-1910) and 20th Century Chamber music is not included in this list (see Late Chamber Music ) nor is late keyboard music (see Late Keyboard ) or orchestral music (see Late Orchestral Music ). For lists of early music CDs, see Early Keyboard Music Early Chamber Music , or Early Orchestral Music In some cases, a CD will contain a mixture of keyboard, chamber, concerto or orchestral pieces, occasionally spanning both early and late classifications. Where ever possible, these have been listed in multiple lists to facilitate locating individual pieces. For revision 2, many new recordings have been added (approximately 630 total new listings across all lists for a total of 750 CDs). Extractions: Robert R. Reilly Because this column usually focuses on a specific composer or theme, I have fallen behind in bringing to your attention a flood of excellent individual releases. Herewith is an attempt to catch up in time for your summer vacation. Summer is full of moments for music that is not meant to storm the heavens but to delight the listener. Such was the vocation of Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), certainly a composer who deserves and will get his own article in a future column. But why wait to entertain yourself with his 28 symphonies? They are deliciously offered in a complete eight-CD set by the CPO label, with the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, under conductor Johannes Goritzki. The delights on these CDs are innumerable, and the level of invention so high that one is tempted to call Boccherini the Spanish Haydn (or the Italian Haydn who happened to live in Spain). This conclusion is borne out by the Naxos labels second release in its series of Boccherinis Cello Concertos (Nos. 5-8), performed by cellist Tim Hugh and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Anthony Halstead. For something effervescent, the CPO label also offers Boccherinis Six Flute Quintets, Op. 55, with flutist Michael Faust and the Auryn Quartet. Richer fare appears on the Virgin Veritas label in the form of Boccherinis superb String Quintets Nos. 1, 4, 5, and 6, from Op. 25, and the imperishable Minuetto from Quintet No. 5, Op 11. Though I usually deplore original-instrument performances, violinist Fabio Biondi and his Europa Galante quintet are so musical that I was completely won over.
