Extractions: Dante Michaelangelo Benvenuto Ferruccio Busoni (April 1, 1866 - July 27, 1924) was an Italian composer, pianist, music teacher and conductor. Busoni was born in Empoli in Italy, the only child of two professional musicians: his German mother a pianist, his Italian father a clarinettist. They were often touring during his childhood, and he was brought up in Trieste for the most part. Busoni was a child prodigy. He made his public debut on the piano with his parents, at the age of seven. A couple of years later he played some of his own compositions in Vienna where he heard Franz Liszt play, and met Liszt, Johannes Brahms and Anton Rubinstein. Busoni had a brief period of study in Graz before leaving to Leipzig in 1886. He subsequently held several teaching posts, the first in 1888 at Helsinki, where he met his wife, Gerda Sjöstrand. He taught in Moscow in 1890, and in the United States from 1891 to 1894 where he also toured as a virtuoso pianist. In 1894 he settled in Berlin giving a series of concerts there both as pianist and conductor. He particularly promoted contemporary music. He also continued to teach in a number of masterclasses at Weimar, Vienna and Basel, among his pupils being Claudio Arrau and Egon Petri.

Extractions: The Busoni mss., 1901-1920, are the letters of Ferruccio Benvenuto Busoni, 1866-1924, Italian pianist and composer. Born in Tuscany and dying in Berlin, Busoni writes these letters in German. To Otto Hessmann of Charlottenburg in 1901 and 1902 he writes about his recent concert tour and comments on the work of the Norwegian composer Christian Sinding. In 1903 he recommends to Herren Ibach, piano manufacturer of Barmen, one of his outstanding piano pupils, Egon Petri. To Ilse the sculptor in 1908 he criticizes a Brahms monument as a "verlegenes Werk." From his retreat in Zurich in 1916 he expresses appreciation to an undentified friend for his fiftieth birthday observance. Accompanying the letters is an outline in pencil for a Toccata dated 3 August 1920. Murray McLachlan - Concert Pianist Creativity in motion The artistic legacy of ferruccio busoni pianist, conductor, author and teacher ferruccio Dante Michaelangiolo benvenuto busoni http://www.murraymclachlan.co.uk/articles/creativity_in_motion.htm
Extractions: Creativity in motion: The artistic legacy of Ferruccio Busoni Whilst the tactile pleasure, exquisite attention to detail, eloquent pianistic layouts, memorable melodies and intriguing structures can immediately be appreciated in all of the compositions listed above, the sheer range of what is on offer, even within a single work or cycle of pieces, can leave a would-be Busonian bewildered and uncertain. Take the Seven Elegies (1907) as a case in point. Though Busoni had written several hundred compositions before these extraordinary miniatures, he insisted that they be regarded as a 'new beginning', coming as they did immediately after publication of his visionary pamphlet 'Sketch of a New aesthetic of Music' in which, amongst other things, he prophesised the emergence of electronic music and the subdivision of semitones. Such criticism is extremely unfair, simply because if you divorce Busoni's 'compositions' from the rest of his artistic legacy, especially his 'transcriptions', a complete picture can never be evident. The catalogue of Busoni arrangements is almost as extensive as the catalogue of his compositions, and even the quickest glance through the often grossly neglected transcriptions in his output shows that Busoni was not one to meekly re-assemble notes. His essay 'Value of the transcription' expresses the view that transcriptions are as 'original' as variations on a theme of another author!
