Extractions: Although Claude McKay enjoyed a certain fame after the publication of "If We Must Die," a sonnet inspired by the racial riots which spread through several major American cities during the "Red Summer" of 1919, it is Home to Harlem (1928) that gave him celebrity and for a brief period eased his financial hardships., Home to Harlem sold eleven thousand copies in the first two weeks of its publication, fifty thousand during its first year and was the first best-seller written by a black writer in America .2 Nevertheless, its depiction of lower-class Harlemites did appal some of the American black leaders, most notoriously W.E.B. Du Bois. In his 1928 Crisis review, he wrote of Home to Harlem: "after the dirtier parts of its filth I feel distinctly like taking a bath" (359). For Du Bois the novel's emphasis on the instinctual, the sensual and the animal worked against the genteel image of respectability which he, as a black leader, had strived to attain for his people; it reinforced many of the stereotypes associated with blacks, especially although the word did not appear in Du Bois's review their "primitivism."During the 1920s, as well as in later critical literature, the central issue of controversy around which the debate on Home to Harlem

Rev. Robert Williamson, pastor of the Butler Charge, saw the need of a church in the community and began holding services in a small school house and sometimes under a brush arbor. The one acre of land on which the present (1951) building is located was donated by the late Freeman Mathews. Messrs. Bill Barnes and Monroe Dixon were the contractors. Judge M. D. Grace owned a sawmill and donated the sawing of the timber for the building. Rev. Williamson and Mr. Grace were the financial promoters of the building. The indebtedness which they assumed was met by subscriptions in lumber, money and labor, practically all of which was donated by people of the community. Messrs. G. J. Downs, M. D. Grace, M. A. Heath, W. G. Mathews, J. W. Boland, and W. T. Harvey were first trustees elected. Messrs. J. A. J. Kimble and J. T. Adams were first stewards elected. The church in those days was loyally supported by the following: J. W. Boland, J. A. J. Kimble, W. D. Grace, W. T. Harvey, Coon Downs, John England and Sisters, William and George Heath, William and Freeman Mathews, J. T. Adams, and others. The good women of the community were a great help in establishing the church. Unfortunately the first church register was burned when the home of one of the members was lost by fire so there is no available list of the charter members.

Extractions: It seems in this day and time that there are so many people going through things. Health problems, financial problems and spiritual problems all seem to plague us, or someone we know constantly. Sometimes it seems we're blinded by the darkness for so long, that we are never going to see the light of day again. Pam Seaman is one of those people who has been there. She has been through the darkness of pain and despair and has been brought back into the Light. It was a long and painful journey, but through her experience, God has allowed her to share her pain with others and share her triumphs as well through music and ministry. Walking hand in hand with her husband, God restored what Satan tried to take away. "It is through my experiences that I developed a deep compassion for suffering women, especially pastor's wives. I speak at many churches and women's conferences and let women know that even pastor's wives may struggle or fail but God can cause us to rise up declare His mercy, grace and delivering power."

SPEECH DAY ART EXHIBITION The Arts Kick Back Reviewer: Sebastian Coombe (Picton, Sixth Form) Let me walk and talk you through a few pieces. Having seen the cream of the outdoor crop, it is time to venture inside to that temple of delight and mystery that is the Art Department itself, and see what beauty lies therein. First of all, for no other reason than it being the first that I see, there is a magnificent sculpture by Stanley Ho of a section of giant twisted rope, made up from smaller twisted ropes, with an ethereal dark blue sheen on the outside, and raw unpainted clay for the inside: a magnificent detail of razor wire enlarged to mammoth proportions. I noticed that several others artists have used the idea of expansion, notably Nick Grimshaw and Harry Gabb.

Extractions: By Barrie Roberts Among the legendary names of Hollywoodâs Golden Age, Mary Astorâs star shines brightly. Strictly speaking, however, Mary was never a star in the accepted sense of her time, but a featured player. This was of her own choosing. Offered starring contracts at various times, she preferred not to shoulder the responsibility of having her name appear above the title of a film. This decision was due largely to a lack of confidence generated by a childhood dominated by demanding parents who looked upon her as a meal ticket. The public with whom she was very popular nevertheless regarded her as a star. Her career lasted an incredible 44 years, during which time she ran the gamut from limpid ingenue to forceful character player. In 1919 Lucile submitted her photograph to a Fame and Fortune contest sponsored by Motion Picture magazine. She placed among the finalists. This was enough to convince her father to move his family to Chicago, where the magazine had offices. Deemed far too young, when seen in person, she was advised to try again when she was older. She did, and was again placed among the finalists. This time the judges named her runner up in the national contest. It was 1920, and Langhanke felt encouraged to move his family once again, this time to New York to launch his daughterâs career. Once in Manhattan Lucileâs picture caught the eye of photographer Charles Albin, who shot a series of camera studies of the girl titled The Madonna Child. These photographs were seen in turn by Harry Durant of Jesse Laskyâs Famous Players company, and this led to a six-month contract for Lucile with Paramount in New York. During a conference with writer Louella Parsons and producer Walter Wanger, Jesse Lasky promptly renamed the girl Mary Astor.
