Extractions: Home Search the archive: International pianist John Briggs says he will defy an order to pull down a four-metre high fence around his East Morton home. Planners claim it is garish and out of character. And councillors on Keighley town and country planning sub-committee yesterday refused to grant him planning permission for the 50 metre-long structure, after they visited his house in Little Lane. His neighbours claim the tennis court-type fence destroyed the outlook from the rear of their homes. But Mr Briggs, 50, who plays 150 concerts a year, objects to the Freedom Mills development at the rear of his house which overlooks his property.
Extractions: Home Search the archive: International pianist John Briggs was told to tone down his act after complaints from fed-up shop staff. Mr Briggs, from East Morton, was entertaining Christmas shoppers in Keighley's Airedale Shopping Centre. But staff at the nearby Birthdays card shop said they had problems hearing customers and asked him to turn down the volume. Mr Briggs, who was performing with keyboard player Neil Poynter to raise funds for Keighley Sea Cadets, duly obliged but said: "It wasn't as if it was heavy metal music!" In return, workers at the card shop agreed to collect money for the cadets.

Extractions: JAKOB LUDWIG FELIX MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY rd February 1809 - 4 th November 1849 Mendelssohn, Felix (1809 - 49), German composer, born Hamburg, grandson of Moses M. (q.v.). He was baptized and educated as a Christian, his father adding the surname Bartholdy to the family name. His youth was spent in the refined surroundings of a family of very considerable wealth, culture and brilliant social connection. He benefited by the tuition and advice of Berger, Zelter, Weber, Cherubini and Moscheles, and by the time he was 20 had already produced his famous Octet, 3 piano quartets, 2 sonatas, 2 symphonies and the Midsummer Night's Dream overture, besides a host of songs, an opera and many short pieces. The next few years were passed in visiting London, Munich, Vienna and Rome, and in incidental tours in Scotland, Italy and Switzerland (1829-31), he achieved a wide fame as pianist, composer and conductor. The first of his 10 visits to England took place in 1829. The Hebrides (fingal's Cave) overture was composed in 1830 (revised 1832). In 1835 he became conductor of the celebrated Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra, and 2 years later married Cecile Jeanrenaud at Frankfurt. He conducted his oratorio St Paul at Dusseldorf in 1836 and Elijah at Birmingham in 1846. Persistent overwork and an excess of activities undermined his health: he died in Leipzig. His reputation, extravagantly high in his lifetime, is now sustained mainly by his violin Concerto, 1844, the incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream (particularly the overture), the Scottish and Italian symphonies and the Hebrides overture. Elijah is still popular with choral societies, but the chamber music and piano works (examples of impeccable craftsmanship, like all Mendelssohn's music) appeal to a more limited circle.

Extractions: sarah beth briggs Pianist Sarah Beth Briggs, "an artist of extraordinary magnetism" (Daily Telegraph), demonstrated her musical gifts from a very early age. At eleven she made history by becoming the youngest ever finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and within a year had made her Fairfield Hall concerto debut. She rose to international attention at fifteen as the joint winner of the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg. Major engagements followed at home and abroad and in 1991 she made her US concerto debut at the San Francisco Midsummer Mozart Festival (a festival to which she has regularly returned). Subsequently her solo career has taken her to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy and the USA, as well as to many leading venues and to music clubs and festivals throughout the UK. She also gave the world premiere performance of newly discovered pieces by Benjamin Britten at the Chester Festival and has made numerous international radio and television recordings. A Hindemith Scholarship in 1987 gave Briggs an opportunity to develop her chamber music skills under the tutelage of Bruno Giuranna at an international series of master classes in Switzerland. This aspect of her musical enthusiasm has been vigorously maintained alongside her solo career. A critically acclaimed chamber music series (sponsored by the Argyll Group) at the Royal Northern College of Music in 1993 led to further chamber music partnerships, including collaborations with the renowned clarinettist Janet Hilton and most recently with her newly formed

Extractions: Jay Jeffries and I met in the world of cabarets and piano bars that glitter NYC nightlife. A revue of songs about drinking was being produced at Judys Chelsea called Bottoms Up! I was conducting and asked the director if he wanted an original opening song; I asked Jay to write the lyric and i would write the melody. The song Bottoms Up! was our first collaboration. After Bottoms Up, John and I realized that we had a penchant for writing edgy, comic songs about the quirks and eccentricities of our friends and acquaintances and their often dysfunctional lives. The distinct New York flavor of the material led us to quickly expand the project to a jaundiced look at our fellow Manhattanites.
