Extractions: For the opening of The Irish Times Celebrity Concert Series the National Concert Hall is delighted to welcome back one of the worlds great pianists Alfred Brendel who has previously performed a number of sell-out concerts here at the Hall. Universally known as one of the leading musicians of his generation, the mutli-award winning pianist was the first to record Beethovens complete piano works, and figured importantly in establishing Schuberts piano sonatas, and Schoenbergs Piano Concerto in the concert repertoire. Besides music, literature has remained Alfred Brendels foremost interest and second occupation. With an extensive and award winning discography, Alfred Brendel now records for Philips Classics and features strongly in Philips Great Pianists of the 20th Century series. The Independent A recital by Alfred Brendel is quite unlike any other experience in the field of music there is a rightness, a wisdom, a density of meaning in everything he does Like every great player, he makes you feel his interpretation is the only one possible. It just seems simple inevitable; an evening with a Zen master.

Extractions: (Philips) Mozart more-or-less invented the piano concerto as we know it today, and not only that, he did it in under a decade - from 1777 to 1786 in Salzburg, a period of inspired creativity framed by these two concertos. The Jeunehomme Well, it turns out there were fewer issues than I expected; Mackerras has such an intelligent attitude towards Mozart (with plenty of period instrument experience to call on), and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra responds with real understanding, the strings particularly seeming to lighten the bow strokes and tone down the vibrato to give a historically informed feel to the whole thing. That slow movement for example - superbly done, with none of the over-emphasis or bogus emotional input that mars some performances. have rubato Andrew McGregor - presenter of CD Review on Radio 3

Extractions: These great Schubert sonatas include the last three, among them the famous D960. These live recordings show Brendel in his key repertoire, in direct contact with his public. Brendel is often credited as the pianist who has brought Schuberts last sonatas to the fore of the piano repertoire. He has recorded them at least twice previously, but never live. This recording is a key testimony to the art of Alfred Brendel.

Extractions: Alfred Brendel may be the most thoughtful pianist alive, yet his work is not bereft of sparkle and energy, either, as these two Mozart piano concertos amply demonstrate. No. 14 is the more mature, consequential of the two pieces presented here; however, I liked Brendel's performance of the earlier work best. It displays youthful vitality, grace, and meticulous playing in equal measure, with unobtrusive orchestral accompaniment. The sound is good in an old-fashioned kind of way. Recorded in 1965, it is closer miked than most of today's material, and with Vanguard's apparent application of some noise reduction, the top end rather loses its sheen. The resultant sound is big, close, and soft; yet not without its own lucidity, as I Solisti de Zagreb is a smallish group and produces more than adequate clarity. The piano itself is
