The question was amusing coming from Brendel, whose seriousness has exemplified the loftiest aspirations of classical music performance during the last half-century. Then again, as Brendel has spent his career demonstrating, to play Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert well requires both lofty aspirations and a healthy sense of humor. 4189 words The full text of this piece is only available to subscribers of the Review 's electronic edition . Extractions: In this fourth volume of his new survey, he performs two of the earliest sonatas, written when the composer was only 19, and the very last. All are relatively demanding technically for the player. For the listener, there are rewards enough. This is Mozart, after all, even if not top-drawer Mozart. The more famous Fantasia in C Minor, not finished by the composer himself, sounds grander and more imposing, even if not authentic in every detail. At age 73, Mr. Brendel still epitomizes the classical German style. He's serious, even spiritual, though he always retains a sense of humor. He uses tone color for emotional and intellectual purposes, rather than for its own sensual sake. He makes the most of these sonatas without ever inflating them.

The younger Brendel has been featured in Lincoln Center's Chamber Music II program for exceptional young performing artists; the elder Brendel is widely recognized for his ability to convey the intellectual and emotional depth of the keyboard literature. On the program are Beethoven 's Sonatas for Cello and Piano in F Major (Op. 5, No. 1), A Major (Op. 69) and D Major (Op. 102, No. 2), and his Twelve variations on "See the conqu"ring hero comes"

Extractions: C onsidering the phenomenal number of articles written about Alfred Brendel, it might seem futile â or at least not particularly useful â to take yet another look at this incomparable pianist. He is an artist whose peers hold him in the highest regard. He is a perfectionist when it comes to technique, and a musical interpreter of profound sensitivity. In fact, he challenges the standards, expectations, and unspoken laws of the classical music jungle and emerges greater than ever, yet able to maintain a disconcerting frankness and modesty. Brendel has a remarkably fine-tuned âear,â not only when performing but with regard to life in general, and he leads parallel lives that are mutually enriching. He is a chamber player (he recently joined with baritone Matthias Goerne, to the delight of fans of the vocal art); he performs with orchestra (in April he will perform all of Beethovenâs concertos with Seiji Osawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra) and as a soloist (recitals in Montreal and Ottawa are scheduled for March and April). Brendel is also an essayist ( Thoughts and Afterthoughts has been providing absorbing reading for musicians and music-lovers for over thirty years); a new-fledged poet (his collection

Extractions: Alfred Brendel's wonderfully antic poems tend toward the unusual if not the downright weird. His is a poetry squarely in the Dadaist tradition, characterized by fantastic or incongruous creations and by nihilistic satire. To help assure that his poems speak on their own terms, Brendel denies the reader the clues titles generally provide, even admitting their sometimes postmodern function of obfuscating rather than elucidating a poem's meaning or intention. (Titles are given at the back of the book, however. ) The import of this absence can be appreciated by imagining, for example, how differently 'The Waste Land' might have been received or understood had Eliot not supplied a title. In most instances titles tell us what is intended. They conventionally prefigure a poem's meaning. In their absence we perforce approach a poem with less preconceptions. And Brendel's poems mean to challenge our preconceptions about the way things are and how they work. Notably humorous on its surface, there is an undercurrent of dread in
