Extractions: Ronald Brautigam, one of Holland's leading musicians, is remarkable not only for his virtuosity and musicality but also for the eclectic nature of his musical interests. He was born in Amsterdam and studied with Jan Wijn, continuing his studies in London and in the United States of America - with Rudolf Serkin. In 1984 he was awarded the Nederlandse Muziekprijs , the highest Dutch musical award. Since then Ronald Brautigam performs regularly with leading European orchestras under distinguished conductors including Frans Brüggen, Riccardo Chailly, Charles Dutoit, Ivan Fischer, Bernard Haitink, Philippe Herreweghe, Christopher Hogwood, Ton Koopman, Roger Norrington, Simon Rattle and Edo de Waart. Besides his performances on modern instruments Ronald Brautigam has developed a great passion for the fortepiano. He regularly gives recitals on his own fortepiano, including several Mozart and Beethoven sonata cycles, and has played concertos with the 18th-Century Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Hanover Band, Concerto Copenhagen and l'Orchestre des Champs-Elysées.

Extractions: Crotchet Amazon UK AmazonUS Compared with Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, Mozart's 18 have never truly caught the fancy of the record buying public in the quite same way his operas, piano concertos and later symphonies have done. Perhaps, like Haydn but unlike Beethoven, the sheer number of symphonies has mitigated against great popularity (except for the last six). But this cannot fairly be said of the piano sonatas where Beethoven's more popular set is, of course, considerably greater in number. More likely is the nature of the works themselves. Mozart did not always choose to prioritise instantly attractive melodies in the piano sonatas in the same way as he did in the symphonies and the operas - although, of course, there are exceptions such as the popular opening movement of K545 and the 'Turkish Rondo" from K331. Nevertheless the sonatas score heavily in charm and, in the last six years of his life, in considerable depth of expression. The fortepiano has not always had a positive press. For many music lovers early experiences of listening to the instrument were almost entirely negative. Sounding more like neglected cottage-uprights with attendant poor tuning and clattery tone, the first recordings did no favours to the instrument at all. But for several years now the majority of recordings have captured a range of instruments all with uniquely valuable aspects, well tempered and tuned and with pleasing individual characteristics. The instrument played here by Ronald Brautigam is one of the finest yet recorded.

Extractions: by Bob Neill Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Piano Sonatas , Stephen Hough, piano, Hyperion Records. If you like CPE Bach, you're ready for Hummelnot because they are musically similar but because they are both intriguing transitional composers who are only audible and hence appreciated by those who can hear through the glare of the reputations of the major composers around them. We don't have that problem with contemporary composers of their qualityand neither did music lovers of the eighteenth century. We are told that time chooses who the major composers are. It does but it also tends to bury some jewels. What will time make of Osvaldo Golijov, the rage of Brookline, Massachusetts, who is deservedly turning our heads around now? Who is in a better position to evaluate his musicwe or our grandchildren? Hummel was a student of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and a teacher of Mendelssohn. Chopin admired his work enormously and took his concertos as models. In his time, he was seen correctly, like Beethoven, as facing toward both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He was well respected and very popular. In our time he has very nearly become a footnote, except to those who truly know music. I discovered him because the organist at Northfield Mt. Hermon School in Northfield, Massachusetts in the late 1980's, Joseph Elliott, made a cassette tape of Steven Hough's brilliant 1987 recording of his piano concertos on Chandos (Opus 85 and 89), which were passed along to me by his son. Now, 17 years later, Hyperion has turned this fine pianist loose on the three of Hummel's piano sonatas.
