Extractions: Victor Borge by: Bruce Johnson Victor Borge passed away December 23. If he was a clown or not depends upon whether you use an exclusive or inclusive style definition of clowning. It is a matter of personal opinion. I personally think he was a masterful clown who used a naturalistic appearance. In any case, clowns could learn a lot by studying his work, which fortunately is well documented by audio and video recordings. I had the pleasure of seeing to of his live performances. At the age of 91, he was still performing. The only adjustment he had to make for age was eliminating the fall off his piano bench. He was the subject of the cover story of The Clown In Times Volume Six Issue Three. Here is some information excerpted from that article. (The original article is much too long to reproduce here.) Victor Borge (Jan. 3, 1909 - Dec. 23, 2000) Victor Borge said, "to people who take music seriously, I'm a musician. To people who don't take music seriously, I'm a comedian. To people who don't take anything seriously, I'm a clown." Whether or not you consider Victor Borge a clown, clowns can learn from him and be inspired by him. For example, one of his routines is to start playing a piece, which doesn't come out right. He takes a closer look at the sheet music, turns it over, resumes playing, and now it sounds right. Arthur Pedlar uses a similar bit in his routine. One of Victor's sons tours with him playing an inept page-turner. Albert Alter plays a similar role in the BozoArts Duo. Victor combines physical comedy, verbal humor, and amazing musical ability.

Victor Borge - The Great Dane victor borge (pronounced Borga) just celebrated his 91st birthday. When Icame to America, who needed a pianist? borge recalls. http://www.holeintheweb.com/drp/bhd/VictorBorge.htm
Extractions: They laughed when he sat down to play Victor Borge (pronounced Bor -ga) just celebrated his 91 st Borge is, of course, far more. Unique in both classical music and comedy, Borge is a very good pianist who is also very funny. Borge was born Borge Rosenbaum on January 3, 1909, in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father, Bernhard Rosebaum, was a musician in the Royal Danish Chapel, and his mother introduced him to the piano when he was three. He was regarded as a prodigy and given a scholarship at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Still in his teens, he earned scholarships to study with noted pianists in Vienna and Berlin. He made his public debut on piano in 1926, gaining immediate recognition. He made his revue debut in 1933 and his film debut in 1937. As a Jew, Borge did not care for the events transpiring next door in Germany. Such barbs forced him to flee Denmark just ahead of the Nazi invasion, to give performances in Sweden which he had prudently booked. From there he went to Finland, and he escaped to the United States on the S.S. American Legion, the last American passenger ship to leave Northern Europe before World War II.

Extractions: Vol 4 2000 - Article Cheryl Tregarthen My grandfather was one of the great inventors of his time; he invented the burglar alarm, which unfortunately was stolen from him. Victor Borge learned music at a young age using his mother's piano. His father, a violinist, played for 35 years with Denmark's Royal Opera Orchestra, and when he came home, Borge said, "My mother didn't recognise him." He started playing the piano when he was only three years old and made his orchestral debut as a soloist with the Copenhagen Philharmonic when he was 10. He was hailed as a genius and given a scholarship to the Royal Danish Music Conservatory. He was educated by Olivo Krause, and later by Victor Schiøler, Frederic Lamond, a protege of Franz Liszt, and Egon Petri. Arriving in New York at Ellis Island, like many emigrants, he had no money, he was unknown and he did not speak the language. After a year he gravitated towards California and Hollywood in particular. Borge was soon playing at Hollywood parties often mingling with members of the Hollywood "Mafia". It was at one of these parties that Rudy Vallee discovered the talents of Victor Borge. Vallee helped Borge get his start in his new country by doing the warmup for the Rudy Vallee radio show. Carroll Carroll, chief writer for Bing Crosby, heard Borge's warmup in Dec. 1941.

Victor Borge Plays To Empty Seats, By Seth Rogovoy By assuming the guise of a concert pianist who would much rather gab than play, borge If you would like to purchase any of victor borge CDs online, http://www.berkshireweb.com/rogovoy/concerts/borge.html
Extractions: by Seth Rogovoy LENOX, Mass., July 28, 1996 Give the 87-year-old Victor Borge credit for not playing things totally by the book. At his performance at the National Music Center on Saturday night, the piano-playing comedian made frequent humorous reference to the sparse crowd in attendance. "Had I known we were going to be this few, we could have gone to my hotel room," said Borge, garnering one of his biggest laughs of the night. In a bit of pre-show drama, promoter Richard Nader invited those who did show but who were mostly seated toward the rear of the hall to move forward and fill in the row after row of seats that sat empty toward the front of the auditorium. There were apparently few takers for the $100 seats; it's not clear how those few who did spring top bucks for the show ultimately felt about rubbing elbows with the hoi polloi. In any case, Borge was a good sport about it, joking about how he peeked out from backstage before the show and saw nothing but red- suited people in the front rows (the seats are red). Presumably if it hadn't been this, it would have been some other theme about the venue Borge would have riffed on in order to add some freshness to a show that otherwise was wearingly familiar and routine. In some sense, Borge's comedy is as up-to-date and cutting-edge as Steven Wright's. It's a slow, conceptual type of comedy that relies more on cognitive leaps of faith than rib-tickling joke-telling, although there was a bit of that, too. At one point he even played games with the shadow cast by the spotlight on the black backdrop an eerie echo of something Wright himself did at this very venue a few years back.
