Extractions: 780 words A William Bolcom premiere is an event not be missed, especially when the composer/pianist is himself a participant. I first heard him perform his own 12 Etudes for Piano in the early 1960s at Tanglewood, and have been an avid follower of his career through numerous stage works and awards, including a Pulitzer Prize, since then. Malfitano at Tully Announced as Catherine Malfitano's accompanist for a varied program at Alice Tully Hall November 26, he unfortunately had to cancel. Chicago Lyric Opera Assistant Conductor Robert Tweten filled in instead, in a program of Rodrigo, Barber, Satie, Poulenc, Weill, and Bolcom - with Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now" as an audacious second encore. All, the singer noted from the stage, were written in the 20th century, including the delightful "Three Songs" of Satie, written in 1916 (not 1887 as misnoted on the program). Bolcom is writing for her both a role (Beatrice) in his new opera ( A View from the Bridge , after the play by Arthur Miller, to be premiered in Chicago in fall, 1999) and a new song cycle ("on a mythical figure whose name begins with M - and it's not Malfitano!" - she asked that no more than that about the new work be revealed), with collaborator Arnold Weinstein, to be premiered in 2000, in English, though translations have already been made of the text into Italian and German. For this concert, she gave the professional premiere of his 1978 "Mary," on a William Blake text.

Extractions: tocr@mail.rochester.edu by Tony Caramia The art of creatively choosing recital repertoire for the modern pianist seems at times a monumentally impossible task, a project and process taking on Herculean proportions. After all, if we really contemplate all the marvelous pieces written for the keyboard in the last three centuries, and then consider which small part of this literal "ton" of music might make for an interesting recital program, our mind goes numb (if not our fingers...). Too often we proceed only with the familiar; we take the safe route and avoid the mystery of the un-traveled, the undiscovered. We hear program after program that features a list of pieces that is seldom chronologically-challenged, as though it is written in some impresarioâs code of conduct that " Since Bach lived before Beethoven and Bartok, we are obliged to perform them in the precise order of their birth " What this can lead to is an audience that is neither stimulated by creative programming nor challenged to listen with new ears, an audience immune to fresh ideas and exciting concepts. (I vividly and fondly remember an all-Russian recital I once heard performed impeccably by Vladimir Ashenazy. As I left the concert hall, I overheard someone remark... "I would have liked some Beethoven".)

Extractions: Scott Joplin (c.1867 - 1917) Alfred Ernst, director of the St. Louis Choral Symphony Society, declared in 1901 that ragtime composer Scott Joplin was a genius. He further described Joplin's enthusiasm for the music of Wagner. Two years later, an interviewer wrote that Joplin "affirms that it is only a pastime for him to compose symcopated music and that he longs for more arduous work." Joplin was then completing his first opera. Scott Joplin made his name as "The King of Ragtime Writers," but his success in writing popular, syncopated piano pieces did not satisfy him. He aspired for success as a composer for the serious, lyric stage. Many (though by no means all) turn-of-the-century writers categorized music according to a strict scale of values: classical music was the "best" music, having excellence that was moral as well as artistic. Opera was at the very peak of this scale. Ragtime, which was perceived as having African American origins, was placed at the bottom. Opponents of ragtime claimed that the music not only lacked artistic merit; it was harmful, as well, to listeners' intellectual, moral, and physical well-being. Joplin naturally did not subscribe to such sentiments. However, he realized that ragtime would never bring him the artistic respect that he desired. His musical interests were also considerably broader than what could be expressed in ragtime. He therefore composed two operas, a ballet, and two orchestral works (a symphonic poem and a piano concerto, both of which are lost).
