Woodruff Foundation to pursue a new cost-containment plan. The grant builds on an earlier grant from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation and will fund projects in the areas of joint purchasing, administrative efficiency and academic applications of technology for the 15 member institutions. "This generous grant from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation will help ACS continue to move forward in a number of vital areas," said Dr. Rita Bornstein, president of Rollins College and ACS chair. "The initiative will enhance our collaborative efforts to strengthen the educational process while promoting efficient and cost-effective operations."

Extractions: Jim Croft, wisest of eldest statesmen, divides repertoire into music that rings my bell - and the other sort, which is as good a way of developing ideas on repertoire as any. I suspect that we tend to accept some music as masterpieces, because theres nothing else; for instance, if the Beethoven Horn Sonata were one of 20 or 40 classic masterpieces for horn and piano, who would play that rather ordinary little piece If we are frank, we might think the unthinkable - how musical are many of the masterpieces of the wind band repertoire? The bright primary colours of the ensemble and the dazzling virtuosity of so many of our players can blind us to the emptiness of the music. The hard-edged neo-classical heritage of the mid-century often conspires to encourage bands to make a noise, and composers to pander to what we do most easily. In fact, many of the major wind works of the mid and late century just dont ring my bell at all, though the better the composer, the more chance the work has of being half decent. Richard Franko Goldman wrote in Musical Quarterly in 1958 a review of the Fennell Mercury 1957 MG50143 recording of the Hindemith, Schoenberg and Stravinsky masterpieces, and uttered what even today must seem heresy ..

Extractions: The musical estate of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, second son of Johann Sebastian Bach, has been rediscovered in Kiev, Ukraine, by Harvard Bach scholar Christoph Wolff, William Powell Mason Professor of Music; Patricia Kennedy Grimsted, Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute; Hennadii Boriak, deputy director of the Institute of Ukrainian Archeo-graphy and Source Studies, and Barbara Wolff, music cataloger at Harvard's Houghton Library. Wolff has been searching for the Bach Wolff has been searching for the Bach material for more than two decades in conjunction with his work on the Bach family's musical sources. The collection was found in Ukraine's Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art as part of the Berlin Sing-Akademie archive of 18th century music. Last available for study in the 1930s, the materials were evacuated from Berlin to Silesia in 1943. They have been missing for over half a century, and many Western scholars feared they had been destroyed.

Packing up the house and revisiting over forty years of letters and programmes is fascinating....... I wondered what happened to that very beautiful Singhalese 'cellist, after whom I wanted to name my daughter Camilla Reynish......(vetoed by my wife).....did I really conduct that Stravisnky Symphony in C thirty years ago in Bristol?....and wow, I remember that performance of David Bedford's Sun Paints in Estonia in which the timpanist only had 3 instruments, and played the bottom timps part on a piano. Looking back over forty years of teaching thirty of conducting, and twenty of commissioning wind works makes me realise what a mountain there is still to climb. Recently a magazine came out with a complete listing of International Competitions. There were competitions for conductors, composers and carriloneurs, orchestras, chamber ensembles, soloists but not one single competition listed for anything to do with wind band or ensemble, composing, conducting or even just bands competing. Where are we? Can you hear us out there? Hellooo.... We are largely stuck in a time-warp at the start of the 20th century. It is interesting that two of my favourite works by Grainger

He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Texas, having studied with Keith Johnson. His previous degrees were earned through studies at the University of Washington and Portland State University, studying trumpet with Gerald Webster, Fred Sautter, and Roy Cummings. He previously served on the faculties of Murray State University and the University of North Texas. Among Murray's other recent solo engagements are a solo performance with the Owensboro Symphony of Shostakovich's Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings , a performance in Mexico City of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, the North American premier of Hans Henrik-Wehding's Konzert Musik for Trompete and Blasorchester with the Murray State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He is featured with the Owensboro Symphony on the just-released Albany recording "Orchestral Music of Arnold Rosner," performing with fellow OSO trumpeter Jonathan Martin the Concerto for Two Trumpets, Tympani and Strings.
