Extractions: Pianist from Ukraine is top finisher at Montreal's International Music Competition by Claudette Berthiaume-Zavada MONTREAL - "From Ukraine - Vitaliy Samoshko!" Not so long ago, the same candidate would have been presented as "From the USSR - Vitaliy Samoshko!" Indeed, four years ago, in 1992, Mr. Samoshko, 18 years old at the time, not only was the youngest candidate and finalist at the Sydney (Australia) International Piano Competition, but was the first to represent Ukraine in the history of that competition. After the competition in Australia, Mr. Samoshko had a wonderful time meeting Ukrainians in Sydney; he was surprised to meet so many of them and to notice their enthusiasm and support. On May 27-June 8, Montreal's musical life was focused on the 26th International Music Competition, devoted this year to the piano. Forty-two candidates from 17 countries were enrolled in the competition. Of the 26 participants in the first round, 12 were selected for the second round and six were accepted for the final round. The 22-year-old Mr. Samoshko ranked first among the most talented pianists in the world, all in their 20s. The jury was composed of six renowned pianists and pedagogues: Idil Biret (Turkey), Sergei Dorensky (Russia), Marc Durand (Canada), Valentin Gheorghiu (Romania), Israela Margilit (Israel) and Julian Martin (United States).

With Classical 101, we introduce music fans to key composers and performers, important stylistic movements, and milestone recordings in the history of classical music. Here Amazon's Ted Libbey introduces the quintessential romanticism of Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), the most beloved poet of the piano. And you can access an audio tour and essay on Chopin's works HERE Frederic Chopin, An Iron Will In September 1831, at the end of an exhausting journey through war-torn Europe, a 21-year-old Polish pianist arrived in Paris. His name, Frederic Chopin, would soon become known to the entire city, and before long would be celebrated wherever music was heard, but the young man started out with little more than his talent, a few letters of recommendation, and an iron will to succeed. Indeed, for years people assumed there was some sort of cosmic connection between Chopin's determination to make a name for himself and the fact that he had been born in the village outside Warsaw of Zelazowa Wola, whose name was sometimes translated as "Iron Will." In fact, Zelazowa Wola was plain old "Ironville."

Extractions: Published in Cairo by AL-AHRAM established in 1875 Recommend Comment Printer-friendly Amal Choukri Catta spent the holy month listening to classical music Click to view caption Martin Spangenberg enthralled the audience on his second appearance in Egypt Symphonic concerts went on as before during Ramadan, attracting as big an audience as ever. Indeed the last few weeks witnessed a rich plethora of well-attended performances by the Cairo Symphony and Cairo Opera Orchestras at the main hall of the Cairo Opera House and Alexandria's Sayed Darwish Theatre. Of these the German National Day Concert, sponsored by the Embassy of Germany and the Goethe Institute to open the ongoing German Festival, was among the most impressive. With Thomas Kalb conducting the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, the evening opened with Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A, KV 622 , with the remarkable Martin Spangenberg for soloist. The concerto is a work of drama and wit, a masterpiece of rare perfection. It is Mozart's last completed work, following close on the heels of the two great operas The Magic Flute and La Clemenza di Tito . Whether or not he realised it was his swansong, the concerto has an elegiac quality over and above its exemplary classical balance and aesthetic poise. It brings to mind, more than anything else, a polished jewel, with impeccably symmetrical facets forming a perfect crystal, with a myriad of colours gleaming through the brilliant surface.

His compositions, principally for the piano, make a remarkable use of the newly developed instrument, exploring its poetic possibilities while generally avoiding the more obvious ostentation of the Paris school of performers. Brahms eventually settled in Vienna, where to some he seemed the awaited successor to Beethoven. His blend of classicism in form with a romantic harmonic idiom made him the champion of those opposed to the musical innovations of Wagner and Liszt. In Vienna he came to occupy a position similar to that once held by Beethoven, his gruff idiosyncrasies tolerated by those who valued his genius. "For manual ordering" ~ click on the spinning disc.
Extractions: A lot of people like Pollini's recording of Boulez 's Second Sonata. I think it's very good. But it was Idil Biret's recording that made me fall in love with the piece. Biret shapes the lines more vividly, and her dyanmic range is astounding. Such things really do count while playing such a piece! Pollini is rather monochrome in comparison. In fact, I dare say Biret's performance of the Second Sonata is the sort of thing one might use to convince people of the intensity and beauty of Boulez's music. I'm not entirely sure about the other Sonatas though. Biret does a good job with the first movement of the First Sonata (with a wonderful sense of disturbed stillness), but the final movement is not as fiery as I've heard in a now unavailable Erato recording (I think the pianist was Pierre-Laurent Aimard). And, to be honest with you, as a composition I don't care much for the Third Sonata. But this is a relatively cheap CD, and the priceless interpretation of the Second Sonata makes it a real bargain
