Extractions: "From the Classics to Carmen Cavallaro" MUSIC: Carmen Cavallaro's rendition of Mozart: "Turkish March" [Polydor POCP-1645, track 14] [under the following] Welcome to Compact Discoveries. I'm your guide Fred Flaxman, and during the next hour I'm going to take you on a trip "From the Classics to Carmen Cavallaro." MUSIC: above piece fades out When I was a child taking piano lessons, I got tired of practicing the same classical pieces over and over again. To relieve my boredom at least when my mother wasn't in the house to hear me I jazzed up the pieces. Many of the big bands of the 1930s and 40s did the same thing. They jazzed up classical pieces for fun and, as it turned out, profit. Benny Goodman did this. So did Tommy Dorsey, Freddy Martin, Glenn Miller, Alvino Rey and Duke Ellington. And I'm devoting another hour of Compact Discoveries to these guys, which I call "Swingin' Classics." But this hour I'm going to feature the music of just one of the musicians from that Big Band Era: Carmen Cavallaro. I'm going to go back and forth between the original classical music pieces and Carmen Cavallaro's version.

Extractions: "Opus 1" MUSIC: Beethoven: beginning of Beethoven: played by Isaac Stern, Eugene Istomin and Leonard Rose [Sony Classical SM2K 64510, disc 1, track 20] Welcome to Compact Discoveries . I'm your guide, Fred Flaxman. The music in the background is the beginning of the Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in E-flat, Opus 1, Number 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The performance is by Isaac Stern, violinist; Leonard Rose on cello and pianist Eugene Istomin. The reason I'm beginning this hour with this particular work is because it is Beethoven's opus one, and "Opus 1" is the theme for this program. The word "opus" is Latin for "work." It is used in English to indicate a literary or musical work or composition. Although you might talk about a book being the author's first opus, books are not given an opus number the way musical compositions are. Opus 1 usually indicates the composer's first published work, not the first work he composed. An author's first book is sometimes his best work or the book he is most known for. It is sometimes his or her only book. In the case of musical compositions, it is rare that the composer's first published work is his best or most well-known composition. And I can't think of any classical composer who wrote just one piece of music which was published and became famous - the musical equivalent of Margaret Mitchell's

Extractions: NAXOS 8.555777 The Turkish pianist Idil Biret has made some celebrated Chopin and Brahms discs for Naxos but this disc represents something of a departure for her. That said, Ligeti's piano Etudes are, by and large, very much less intimidating than the composer's general press might have led you to expect. The CD is notable in that it includes the first recording of Book II's XIVa. It is also slightly controversial in that Biret chose to favour the score's musical markings over the precise timing indications when the two came into conflict. So what can you expect if your sole or main exposure to Ligeti is via the choral/vocal works, particularly the (in)famous

Madeleine De Valmalète The French pianist Eric FerrandN Kaoua, born in 1963, began working with Madeleine information about idil biret s childhood days when she met Mme de http://www.arbiterrecords.com/notes/144notes.html
Extractions: As a young student, she entered the piano class of Isidor Philipp at the Paris Conservatoire. Philipp, a noted interpreter of the music of Franz Liszt, focused on developing virtuoso technique through total control of interpretive nuance and sonorities. Madeleine also studied with Joseph Morpain, who taught Clara Haskil among others. Like Haskil, Madeleine would always feel great affection for Morpain, whom she designated as her "Maître." World War I soon broke out, effecting all of Europe: Madeleine's brother was drafted, and her father lost his source of income. Her mother, a painter of considerable talent, could no longer live by selling her art. To help the family income, Madeleine was obliged to give piano lessons. This sort of adult responsibility assumed at a young age tested her stubborn personality which, combined with rare energy, infused her performances. By this time she was playing alongside established musicians in benefit concerts for victims of the Great War. Critics praised her varied artistry, passionate temperament, and staggering technique. Saint-Saëns wrote to her to praise her rendition of his "Danse macabre," and she soon would have the opportunity to play for Ferruccio Busoni. As her career developed, she often gave local premieres like the first Monte Carlo performance (1916) of Edward MacDowell's Piano Concerto No. 2. By the war's end she was truly independent, and forthrightly became the second Frenchwoman ever to earn a driver's license, yet still lived with her much-respected mother, whose constant presence may have discouraged potential suitors.

Joyce - Music: Pierre Boulez's "Third Piano Sonata" As the pianist Steffan Schleiermacher points out, the performer must also employ Pierre Boulez (Composer); idil biret (Piano)/ Naxos CD / Released 199 http://www.themodernword.com/joyce/music/boulez_sonata.html
Extractions: Pierre Boulez on his Third Piano Sonata A musical labyrinth incorporating nonlinear design, performer-based decisions, and notions of form itself as a principle aesthetic, Boulez's Third Piano Sonata represents a pinnacle of musical Modernism an "open work" cast in ivory and ebony. Despite (or more likely, because of) this, the Third Piano Sonata is more often discussed than heard; and having spawned numerous essays, critiques, justifications, nearly-inscrutable liner notes and snide post-mortems, it has probably produced more commentators than actual players. It is also rather difficult to perform, requiring much preparation on the part of the interpreter in terms of organization as well as practice. Finnegans Wake pointed the way to an open text, a cyclical work available for entry at multiple points. Boulez always ready to overturn the old order in his quest for musical revolution was greatly attracted to these ideas, and sought a way to adapt them to the compositional process. The result was the Third Piano Sonata, a "work-in-progress" that to this day awaits "completion."
