Last year Birets interpretations of Ligetis Etudes and Stravinskys Firebird Suite featuring the composers own piano transcription were released - the latter resulting in an Editors Choice award by the British GRAMOPHONE magazine. On the occasion of a gala concert given last Friday in the Benedictine Monastery Gerleve, Germany, the label honoured its star pianist Idil Biret. Chris Voll, Managing Director of NAXOS GERMANY, presented her with a special commemorative plaque celebrating the sales record. Birets virtuoso concert was the highlight and finale of an eight-week Turkish-German cultural project ARTE TURCA which staged an art exhibition, poetry recitations, classical and jazz concerts. The Ankara-born pianist praised the project as a good opportunity to get to know each other better, and very much appreciated the concentrated and spiritual atmosphere in the fully booked abbey church. For some of the more than 500 listeners there was standing room only.
