Extractions: American composer, conductor, pianist, and writer. He wrote in virtually all genres, often merging popular and classical styles. Leonard Bernstein was something of a musical polymath. In the world of Western art music he enjoyed a worldwide reputation as a conductor and a composer. He was also a great communicator, and perhaps more than anybody else he was able to explain music (especially Western art music) to a wide audience. At the same time, he created music for the Broadway stage, and successfully integrated popular styles (especially jazz) into his musical vocabulary. His conducting career progressed rapidly, and he was closely associated with the New York Philharmonic (where he served as music director from 1958 to 1969), the Israel Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was in demand throughout the world and was the first American to conduct at Milan's La Scala opera house. Through most of his career he was a passionate supporter of contemporary music, though in his later years he also turned back to older styles, especially the late romantics such as Mahler. Bernstein also used the podium as a way to popularize the music he loved. In 1958, he began a series of televised Young People's Concerts that brought symphonic music into the homes of Americans.

Extractions: Leonard Bernstein was the first major orchestra conductor born and trained in America. Bernstein's work not only reflects the change in American culture during the second half of the 20 th Century, but also helped make that change. One of the main criticisms of Bernstein was that his interests were too diverse for him to make a definitive statement in any one area. In this series, we demonstrate that each aspect of his work - as teacher, conductor, composer and media figure - helped illuminate the whole.

Extractions: Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) is one of the most significant art-music composers of the twentieth century. He was a "composer, conductor, educator, pianist, and television personality" (The Enjoyment of Music, p. 588). He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and his parents were Russian Jewish immigrants. Bernstein's intelligence and musical potential was clear at a very early age: he played the piano and was apart of a jazz band when he was thirteen. "He took piano lessons as a boy and attended the Garrison and Boston Latin Schools. At Harvard University, he studied with Walter Piston, Edward Burlingame-Hill, and A. Tillman Merritt, among others" (Biography: Leonard Bernstein ). At the age of twenty two, Bernstein studied at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer institute, Tanglewood. The orchestra's conductor was Serge Koussevitzky, and Bernstein later became his conducting assistant. This laid the foundation for a very promising future for Bernstein, as he was the youngest American-born composer to become director of the New York Philharmonic at the age of forty. Bernstein is one of the greatest composers of the 20th century for two major reasons. First, he was multi-talented in various aspects of music. He was a composer of a large body of work ranging from symphonies, to opera, to most significantly, musical theater. Some of Bernstein's major symphonic compositions are "'Prelude, Fugue and Riffs' for solo clarinet and jazz ensemble (1949); 'Serenade' for violin, strings and percussion, (1954); 'Symphonic Dances from West Side Story,' (1960); 'Chichester Psalms' for chorus, boy soprano and orchestra (1965) and 'Mass: A Theater Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers,' commissioned for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC" (Biography:

During the 1960s, '70s and '80s, he was the nation's de facto if unofficial music laureate, bringing his immense charisma and celebrity to bear in shaping and refining our musical tastes. But for all his gifts, what Leonard Bernstein was not was a great composer. The plain fact is that Bernstein was a good composer at best, and so pianist Bill Charlap's new disc of Bernstein's songs is limited right from the get-go by the material. And yet, Charlap and his trio (Peter Washington on bass; Kenny Washington, no relation, drums) have created a musical tapestry with this album that in many ways elevates the music it is built on. Much of the strength of this album comes from the empathy of this trio, which has been together seven years now. It is, in fact, almost an instrument of its own, with the interplay between the three men so intrinsic, so utterly seamless that in many ways it reminds of the way Duke Ellington used his orchestra as his singular instrument. Charlap's piano playing is possessed of a timeless elegance; it recalls Hoagy Carmichael and Erroll Garner, black-and-white movies and cocktail parties. Were Sam sick one night, Charlap could easily sit in on piano at Rick's Place and no one would be startled.

Extractions: Illustration by Art Seiden by Seymour "Sy" Brody Leonard Bernstein has his aunt to thank for introducing him to music. When he was 10 years old, his aunt gave his family her piano. He was so fascinated with it that he began to play by ear and to compose simple pieces for It. Despite his father's apprehensions about musicians, he soon began formal piano lessons. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on August 25, 1918, Bernstein was the son of Russian immigrants, Samuel Joseph and Jennie, nee Resnick, Bernstein. His father was in the hair goods and beauty supply business. Bernstein attended Boston Latin School, where he received a well-rounded early education. He graduated from Harvard in 1939 with a degree in music. He continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where there were many leading musicians on the staff. When World War II broke out, Bernstein was just beginning his career. His first work, the Clarinet Sonata had been published and he was busy producing operas for the Boston Institute of Modern Art. He received his first major opportunity in September 1942, when he was appointed as the assistant conductor at Tanglewood, Massachusetts.
