Extractions: The unlikely combination of WQED, National Public Radio and a four foot length of wire brought me back to Heinz Hall for Sundays Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. When I took my MFA at Carnegie Mellon University some twenty years back, I was a frequent visitor and great admirer of one of North Americas finest orchestras. Since then, life has taken to me to hundreds of destinations but not, yet, back to the city of Three Rivers (I have also noted that neither the Steelers nor the Pirates have won a championship since my departure!). Also, until Sunday, Id only managed to pick up Buffalos WNED-FM on my car radio, but detailed reading of my receivers manual and then attaching a metre of aerial to the prescribed fastener remedied that. So it was with great anticipation that I flicked on the tuner at eight. In sum it was an enjoyable experience despite the surfacing of a few non-musical distractions. But music first: the natters to follow.

Extractions: Interview Insight into the world of a musician A One Man Orchestra Classical pianist Emanuel Ax, affectionately known as Manny, is a seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist in demand all over the world. His accomplishments surpass many in his field, yet he seems to be astoundingly composed about it all. Yet, he is a virtuoso in his field and is critically acclaimed by his fans, fellow musicians and students. Born in Lvov, Poland, Ax arrived in North America when he was just 12-years-old, and has been reaching new heights ever since. He attended the Juilliard School of Music and was highly influenced by his teacher Mieczyslaw Munz. Ax is known for his brilliant technique and poetic lyricism, all of which can be heard in his many recordings for RCA and, now exclusively, Sony Classical. Among the countless people he has performed with are Jaime Laredo, Isaac Stern and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, whose collaborative recordings won several Grammys. Ax has also earned many awards since the age of 25, including the Rubinstein Competition in 1974 and the Avery Fisher Prize in 1979. Recently, Emanuel Ax spoke, via telephone, from his home in New York, which he shares with his wife, pianist Yoko Nozaki, and their two children. He gave some simple insight into his love of the piano, his new album with Yefim Bronfman, and reasons to listen to classical music.

Concert Premiere Review Being a piano concerto written for emanuel ax, Rouse used the played on ax,as the great pianist has always resisted playing Schumann s Piano Concerto, http://www.fp1.com/sept98/columns/arts/rouse/rouse.html
Extractions: Christopher Rouse is one of America's most exciting new composers. He has been hailed as an "American Shostakovich," and counts as his influences Beethoven, Wagner, Mahler, Varèse, Led Zeppelin and Jefferson Airplane. He teaches a college class in Rock and Roll History, and in 1993 he won the Pulitzer Prize for, of all things, a trombone concerto on the theme of death. His expressive works are full-blooded with passion, known for explosive passages of barbaric intensity as well as slow movements of ethereal loveliness, and some of his more fiendish passages have been known to drive some faint-hearted concert-goers out of the hall. And during the first week of May, the New York Philharmonic premiered his new work, a piano concerto written for Emanuel Ax and representing a musical descent into madness. Born in 1949, Rouse comes from a generation pitched between rock music in the popular world and a new freedom and eclecticism in the compositional world. And perhaps more than any other composer of his generation, Rouse has successfully pursued his own "grand unification theory" among the world of tonalism, serialism, neo-Romanticism, minimalism, and post-post-everythingism. Although his influences are certainly diverse (and include rhythms derived from rock, modern tonalities and dissonance, and a Romantic sense of musical

Extractions: April 25, 2003: Crystalline Landscape in a Cavern Bass Concert Hall, April 15 Hearing clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and pianist Emanuel Ax at Bass Concert Hall is like watching chess at Memorial Stadium. This is no place for chamber music; especially as played by Stoltzman, who is master of the intimate nature of his instrument. Ax invited the audience to move closer to the stage, but the space left the musicians and the audience at a disappointing disadvantage. Rather than forsaking tone to fill the space, Stoltzman took a whispery approach to Robert Schumann's Fantasy Pieces . His timbre is reminiscent of shakuhachi playing deftly shaded colors and long gently flowing lines. It's hard to hear the point of articulation where each pitch in a melody begins and ends. The degree of difficulty was upped by his slower than usual tempos. But the sense of ensemble was not up to this pair's standards although some of that may have been due to the less-than-optimal setting. Too often, phrasing and dynamics headed off into different directions. Like Benny Goodman, Stoltzman straddles the classical, contemporary, and jazz repertoires. All three were represented in the tuneful
