Extractions: Pianist Emanuel Ax Carmel Music Society Pianist Emanuel Ax by Lyn Bronson Pianist Emanuel Ax closed the Carmel Music Societys 2002-2003 concert season last night with a highly successful concert at the Pacific Grove Middle School. It was gratifying indeed to see a sold out house for a classical concert on the Monterey Peninsula, where jazz events outnumber classical concerts to an extraordinary degree. Mr. Ax last appeared locally under the auspices of the Carmel Music Society in a sonata recital with Yo Yo Ma at Sunset Center, an event that occurred over ten years ago. This was simply one of the best concerts ever heard on the Monterey Peninsula, and it certainly demonstrated beyond any doubt that Mr. Ax is a highly skilled and artistic collaborative artist as well as a distinguished recitalist and concerto soloist. Known affectionately to his friends as Manny, Mr. Ax was an affable, and self effacing host last night as he walked out on stage to perform an interesting program consisting of two sets of Beethoven variations, Leonard Bernsteins Touches, and a selection of works by Chopin to end the program.
